85 Hilux, worked 308, broken 5sp box what to do?
Hi I have an 84 hilux with a built 308 that makes a fair bit of power,
the same day i put the motor in (to replace the 253 that was in it) i broke 1st gear
i kept driving it now the whole box is full of metal soup and it barely drives
So i need a new box, i believe the box in it is a w58 supra 5 speed, I was going to put an r154 in it but i just rang a guy to do it and he told me that it wont fit, will need a new bellhousing etc. is there a stronger box i can bolt up? or do i need to go custom shit?
the motor has a forged bottom end high comp pistons, a mild cam and headwork, i'm led to believe about 300ish hp.
If you can offer any advice i would love to hear it
Matt

Re: 85 Hilux, worked 308, broken 5sp box what to do?
A 5sp from a 4.2 GQ Patrol will hold up to that power easy. Ive never seen a supra box but i dare say it would be lucky to be half the size of the nissan box.
Which ever way you go you're up for another adapter so it aint gonna be nice on your wallet...

Go with an "R" series box + adapter as the GQ box will never fit in the existing hole without cutting up the floor, new X member, etc.

I agree good luck fitting a GQ box in a lux without extensive mods. Additionally the R boxes are heaps smoother and nicer to shift than the tractor gearbox found in patrols.Mr DJ wrote:Go with an "R" series box + adapter as the GQ box will never fit in the existing hole without cutting up the floor, new X member, etc.

Re: 85 Hilux, worked 308, broken 5sp box what to do?
G'day Matt,
The W58's will hold up if u treat em ok. The 5 litre will keep destroying them if you've got a heavy foot-which u probably do if u put a warmed over 308 in it.
The R150 and R151's (4wd R154 with lower gearing) are strong enough but will require a different bell housing. Try CRS or dellows. Should b around $500 and you might need a new clutch. The R boxes come with the chain driven transfer case which might not suit if u want reduction gears.
The patrol box is strong and the Marks sell reduction gears for the transfer.
Other option is to run a T700 auto...

Clutch gear should be ok to reuse same input shaft in R150/151/G52/W56 I believe. R154 is 20mm longer.

t400 or t700 if its a turbo pattern block, alot softer on the rest of your drivetrain too.
