BFG muddies, Removing rim protector?

Has anyone tried removing the molded rim protector from their BFG mud terrains (older style ones)
All the rim protector does is scoop mud into the bead and create leaks. It's really starting to s#!t me. I've got 2 tyres that go dead flat within days.
What I want to know is has anyone tried to grind/ sand off the rim protector? and is there anything hidden behind it? Wires/ belts, etc?
Googled it but couldn't find anything. I thought the yanks would have come up with something, but I couldn't find anything on it.

No reason why you couldn't remove it but I don't see the point. No rim bead just means the mud etc goes in there sooner. It's all part of 4wdriving and low tyre pressures don't help

Well BFG did and none of their new tyres have it anymore.

And???? BFG don't mold them and remove after its a different mold. I still don't see any real reason to remove on existing tyre

Ive got the km2's. They trump the old style muds in everyway, except for the rim protectors. The get alot more mud and crap in them without it. If your worried. Just sikaflex the bead up. Then no shit can get in at all.

Out of all the people I go wheeling with, I'm the only one with these tyres, and I'm the one with the most leaks. Pretty sure the rim protector has something to do with it. I think this may be the reason the new Mud Terrains don't have the rim protector. Do any other brands use a rim protector? Can't remember seeing any Maxxis tyre with them.

Nah don't want to do that. They'll be a bitch to get off if I have to remove them.

Thats the problem, I have seen rigs in the past with the same tyres and they were the only ones getting slow leaks. When the new BFG KM2 was first advtertised in the adverts it clearly said NO RIM PROTECTOR.

I agree, plenty of mud in the beads on the old style, new KM2's are much better, not one leak in 40000k's.
