td42 HELP!!! at whits end!

Post by sideways »

Hi all ,
i have put a reco td42 engine in but cant get it to run , have had the pump rebuilt thinking that was the problem ,i have had it spot on with the dial indercator as well. I have put in new injectors in it , i have bypassed the fuel filter and even put new fuel line through thinking there was air getting in but that was no the problem either.i get alot of black smoke coming out the exhaust but it just wont go . i have pulled the timing cover off and and the timing marks seem to be in the right place .i have done a compression test on it and it is all good there. Now for the kicker , when i crank it over it is exhausting out the intake on cylinder no2 and 4 .WTF!!!. can anybody give me some other ideas as what it could be . i am ready to put a match to it!
Thanks

Just rebuilt mine. Has your rebilder done a TD42 before? No offence. Sounds like your timing mark might be in the right place for the timing pump, but is it in the right place for the cam? Take the timing cover off and check the #1 piston at TDC. As you run it around you should see the exhaust valve open with the rocker cover off. If it doesn't, then you will need to take it back to your builder.

Pump and or cam 180 degrees out. Timing marks will line up if this is the case so easy mistake. Pull the pump out and turn it 180, then if that doesn't work check the cam. When u put the engine back together you should have no# 1 on tdc, and the cam should be rolling along the back side with rockers sitting idle and loose.
