How much should i pay for old warn hi mount?
The Neighbour across the road said I could buy the hi mount winch off his car that he has never used for $900. the winch looks the same age as the 60 landcruiser it is on. the winch looks like it has been looked after by the previous owner. the winch is still in good working order. And i still need to take it off the car. I can't read the plate on the winchmotor apart from the serial number 027 due to a Rusted pipe clamp on it. I can See a serial number on the housing of 294308. Also i can see stamped on the housing and motor a stamp of F07. Is $900 to much to pay for it?

brandnew they can be had for 2300-2400 dollars so i would say give him 700 dollars .

$900 for a complete winch ready to use is a good, fair price. I sold mine for $500 and it doesn't have a control box, cable or controller and that was considered a very cheap price. For $900 I'd definitely buy it. I'd also haggle the price a bit too but that is a good fair price.
Having said that. They are not exactly an awesome winch straight out of the box and they don't simply bolt into most winch bars. You need to factor in the extra cost of any modifications that you may need to do to the bar for fitting and also having the winch strengthened in a few areas.

I would struggle to pay $900 but that isn't saying it isn't a fair price. I would definately go back to your neighbor & haggle with the usual excuses on having to pull apart & check/service as they are prone to water ingress after a period of time. I think you could get it for $700-750 .

i would not pay $900 as if it really is as old as the 60 it probs needs new seals , motor and solenoids .

I paid $750 for mine with a dud motor and in pieces (I was able to check all the parts before buying).
After all new seals, bearings, 7Hp motor, 40 m of 10mm rope, a decent hook and hi amp solenoid it owes me $1650.
The brake pads were fine and the gears were like new so I only added new ball bearings to the brake.
Providing you can reco it yourself then it can be that cheap to have a fully recoed hi mount.

i have offered 850 but the guy is a bit of a dreamer reckons he could get 1500 but he is willing to sell to it me for 900. I can't bring myself to giving in. He has gone to work for two weeks so i see him then. He came looking for me today but i was at work so he sounds like he is a bit more keen. Also is it possible to cut up my standard arb bull bar and fit it. I havn't measured but i think i will need to cut the grill and more anoyingly the 1'' panel that is under the grill in the 105 landcruiser. I have Just made a 1.1 t hard floor camper so i need to get some "on board insurance"

For a 100 series (heavy tourer?) with 1.1t camper is be looking for a 10000lb+ low mount.

Woo, wait a minute. I wouldn't give up on the high mount so quickly. Nothing wrong with a low mount, but from what I've seen the high mounts are the way to go. They have great line speed, better than any low mount that I've seen. The high mounts also pull very well. I've seen some heavy rigs, Cruisers and Patrols, on some extreme tracks and the high mounts are amazing. You can spool lots more rope onto a high mount. This gives you more flexibility of choices of style of recovery, ie you can choose a winch point that is further away, and you can do longer double line pulls.
My advice would be that if you have to fiddle with the bar etc. do it.
Go for a high mount if you can. Even if you have to rebuild it. They are better.

Yeah i have done some mods to a high mount spool before ie made it longer etc and increased the inner drum thickness soo it doesn't crush. But i didn't see end product as i was just the machinist. But i think the winch was a bit of a thomas/warn combo. So do like the idea of of the high mount beacuse i can make/fiddle with it. I did have in the back of my mind it wasn't light but i assumed the double pull opition would solve the problem. Still undecided but 2weeks to make my mind up. Where we normal go camping it will only get used if we can't get up a sandy hill/beach. So i will have to make a sand anchor as well.
