Engine conversion for 40/45 series

Post by brad 93hilux »

Hey guys I did a search but didn't find what I was after, a mate of mine has bought a 40 (maybe 45 series I'm not 100% sure) LWB troopy and wants me to help him fix her up a bit.

At the moment it is running the factory petrol motor (2H) but it is slow as hell n drinks the fuel.

Just after the best cost effective engine conversion that will deliver reasonable fuel economy but not cost a fortune to install.. Hoping for less then 20L /100. He'd prefer v8, but isnt that worried (doesn't want diesel).

Let me know what you think and an idea of cost..

Cheers
Brad

I vote 2H Turbo i've had three and they ae a great reliable cheap motor that responds well to turboing unlike the later 1h motor. My current one makes about 100hp at the wheels and gets along nicely, Can overtake up hills on the highway etc.

PS when mine was first turbo'd it got 13l / 100 klms about 5 or six years ago. I just checked it the other day after i accidently but 700ml of petrol in it and it got 13.2l to the 100k in a lifted 60 with bar winch 32's etc.

Pretty sure a 2 H I's a diesel. It's the 2F which I's the petrol. You can always put the 3F fuel injected head on it and then convert to LPG

V8 I's a option tried true and tested. Fairly simple conversion ad everyone has done it

Yeh that sounds right.. Just had my letters mixed up..

It currently is petrol/ LPG but gets really poor economy on both.. Approx 300 kms a tank of petrol on the highway.

But the 4 speed gearbox would not help.

I was thinking a injected 5 litre but not sure of real world cost to install one in the backyard.

I used to have a 40 ute that I was going to do an engine swap on. I was led to believe the 2f was a copy of a chev 6, and a V8 chev has the same bell housing bolt pattern and will bolt straight up. Surely someone on here has done it already.

Fixed.

Falcon 6cyl motor would have to be the cheapest bang for your buck conversion. It's been discussed a few times on here so have a search. If nothing turns up sing out as the search function can be difficult to use.

Definitely go the diesel. What's your mates issue with a diesel motor??

I personally like the diesels.. But he more wants power then torque.. Just his preferance that's all

I put a 305 Chev in my 45. I had the Dellow bell housing and clutch already, pair of Marks Adaptors engine mounts at 250 bucks, wiring was easy. If you had to buy a V8, bell housing, clutch set up, engine mounts and did it all yourself you could get out of it for under 5k. All depending on what sort of V8 you go for. If you go for the later LS* motors there is a lot more involved with the wiring computer etc.

In Victoria you don't need an engineers certificate if the replacement engine is of the same configuration and has similar power output and chassis mounts are left untouched. Making falcon Inline 6's a very cost effective and wise choice.

But I think a 1FZ would be an awesome swap into the old 45. They arent very much for a good second hander. Add a turbo later on. It would be a very powerful bus.

It really all depends on what he's willing to pay and what pops up at the time.

Does he want to stay manual or go to auto?

i put in a 304 injected motor. $1000
marks engine mounts. $200 ish?
into a TH400 box. $300
then adapted to transfers. $600 for adaptor kit on ebay. or 1k new.

but $850 for engineering is a hassle.

anyway i rate having 8 cylinders in my toy.

Yeh still wants the manual gearbox, thinking we are going to install the 304 holden motor for the effort involved may as well get the extra power of 8cyl, plus he wasn't keen on turbos.. Just wants reasonable power and fuel economy with a n/a motor..

Hey dirty rock star, what's your fuel economy like? What size tyres and ratios? Just to give me a idea what to expect

Cheers

A mate of mine has a patrol 4.2 diesel with twin turbo setup, which has more than enough power. Frickin' flys

A 304 will do the job but don't expect anything spectacular in standard form. But as mentioned above they have alot of options to play with. They sound awesome. Can be bought cheap. Not a bad option.

But just because it has 8cyl does not mean it has more power.

If you are swapping from 4spd to 5spd the box is around 3 inches longer. When I swapped the 2f for a small block chev it was the perfect amount to move the engine forward to clear the firewall. And didn't require tailshaft lengths to change. I used a dellows bellhousing, chev fly wheel (you would use a Holden one) re-dowelled for the landcruiser pressure plate. standard gearbox crossmember and just moved it forward and reused 2 of the original chassis threads/holes (drilled 2 new holes, there are 4 bolts in total for each side). Made up some chassis mounts using the original rubber mounts.

my line of thought was "Well if a 12HT fits, why shouldnt a 1HD-xxx fit?"

I have a 1HZ in mine, so a 1HD could definitely be made to fit.

Yours is 80 chassis Dex? Sloth84 had a 1hzT in his 45 bodied 80 chassis'd rig. There was a white 45 with a 1HD in it over perth way they where asking 40k for it. Nicely restored / modded.

Just 1vd- no J in the engine code.

VDJ is the model designation like BJ40
