Spline machining. Swaybar ?

Does anyone know of any local places that do spline machining?

Might be looking at shortening a sprintcar swaybar and due to limited room in the front of my zook, this maybe the easiest way.

I'm out windsor/richmond area nsw, but can travel.

Mal used a sprint car sway bar for a while bu tthey dont twist enough and they end up snapping... so if you have lots of travel i wouldnt suggest it..

The front was going to be for onroad only. Rear i was going to run one also, but normal length and permanent/adjustable

Zook: (too high atm, no body weight/barwork/fuel/sets/etc at the moment, 14" coilovers. 3linkf, 4linkr

I plan to make my sway bar from a 100series torsion bar but I don't have the internal spines to match. So Im gunna get the torsion bar splines machines down to a square and have the arms laser cut out to suit. Just the way I had planned.

I have heard of using 100' torsions, but can't find any cheap. How long are they? Alot of various make torsions are way too long for a zook.

The sprintcar torsions i have atm, I have metal spline clamps so im making the arms to suit. (all free)

The front swaybar can be ugly and stiff, i dont care if i have to fully take it off for offroad, its for onroad only.

100 series is 1160mm. Pity they arnt an extra 100mm because they finish just flush with the outside of a patrol chassis rails. I got mine from the local 4wd shop for nothing, they had about 10 in the bin out back. One of mates hasn one and reckons its the best thing he ever did. Post some pics up if you get around to it, mine is probably still a couple weeks off

2 common sizes for sprintcars torsions, end to end 29"(736.6mm)and 30"(762mm). 25mm long spline on each end. 30mm OD

i have seen one made from a LR axle with a fwh on one end so it can be engaged/disengaged

That would be ok for my rear if i was to disengage it. No room in front to do this.

don't bother getting splines broached, bloody hard to get it done and costly.

there are torsion bars available fromt the states in the length you want and the diameter you want to give the desired torsion load. You just pick the nearest size to what you want and then specify the diameter after you do your length/load/twist calcs.

I have gone the 100 series torsion bar on my rear sway bar and it works a treat. HOWEVER, for the same money i could have bought a currie antirock or a custom torsion bar and arms out of the states so at least then i could have fine tuned the sway bar rate easily. Because of the spline pattern on my arms i ONLY have the choice of the 100 series arms rate.

As for your front disconnect, you "could" have a free wheeling hub inner gear broached to accept a common sway bar spline. This would be neat and quick, but disconnects on the links is easier and has been done a million times before.

I can almost guarantee you that by the time you have custom spline broaching done, arms made, parts sourced, the currie or the other custom sway bars that are available are cheap by comparison

I would have to agree, I had a couple torsion bars from Lux's laying around but I think I have turfed all of them.

Theres a lot of soft roaders out there with torsion bar suspension, could be worth a trip to the local wreckers have a look under various cars and see what suits your purpose.

i think the 100series are about the longest torsion bars out there though.

This is why the sprintcars are looking more simple. 1 end only needs to be redone. The sprintcar torsions i have atm, I have 4 metal spline clamps to weld to so im making the arms and links to suit. (all free) The rod ends/swaybar bushes, should be able to find some off a 4wd somewhere. Free at my local wreckers. Thanks to mum..

About 600mm in my case using 14mm thick plate. Heavy as hell but at that lenght there's a LOT of twisting and bending forces available along the length of the arms. Any shorter than 600 and even worn out standard 100 series arms are going to have your car flexing like a house brick.

Cheers for that, also we abouts do your links attach? I'm thinking to somewhere on the lower control arms to limit the amount of travel on the sway bar arms. Anyone got any pics of their set ups?

Depending on what control arms, The swaybar will try the twist them. Also depends on how you mount them, And how the arms move when flexing.
