To super charge or not to super charge.
I have a 98 GU patrol that i want a little more power out of. A mate of mine has done the v8 conversion and has had no end of dramas, i was wondering if any one had supercharged the standard 4.5 litre petrol motor and also run it on gas. I was thinking of running an after market computer possibly haltec to run the petrol/and gas & possibly get a little more economy out of the thirsty bastard. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Cheers

You might get better answer's in the pissan section

Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
put a 7" lift and 37" tyres on it and drive like a peanut - you'll fit right in
indubitably
A speed camera would have prevented that!
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
A mate turbo'd his 4.5 and put a rod through the block on over boost and lean mixture.
Unless you know what you are doing I would steer away from adding boost with the petrol motor. Diesel is another matter as a turbo is something that they thrive on.
An engine that is designed for low end torque is what you need for 4W Driving. If you want a power house, buy a sports car.

There are a few around. (including a couple of threads on here)
However don't think it will cost you less than an engine conversion.

What do we want? TIME TRAVEL! When do we want it? THAT'S IRRELEVANT!
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
srsly look up raptorthumper he had a build on here with a boosted lpg TB45. IMO TB45 is a damn strong engine, like all nissan engines, and would suit forced induction well.

Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
If you do this then make sure you upgrade the conrods at the very least. They aren't as strong as the TB42 or TB48 rods. But next time you might want to post this in a tech section.UhhOhh wrote:srsly look up raptorthumper he had a build on here with a boosted lpg TB45. Ok here's my story,
I had a 98 tb45 which got boring very quick, slow and thirsty!! And while being a strong motor in stock form once boosted like people have said they blow rods and have water cavitating problems which wear holes in the timing case(which I found out..)
So I put a 304 v8 in and to be honest that got boring almost just as quick.. So I did what any v8 owner did to get more grunt, supercharged it with a top mount yella terra running 10psi and cam/engine mods to suit! All I can say now is WOW! Awsome power and torque at very low revs! Only problem so far is I blew the clutch on the way home from hols towing my trailer and a heap of camping gear.. But should have my new clutch by the end of the wk(custom made jobby)
Also you will need to run gas injection as the old mixer system will not work.
If you plan on seriously doing the charger give Gaspower a call in Cardiff nsw as he had a Supercharger tb45 running gas injection, he had it for years and never had any problems

Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
hi i have done a lot of research on s/c 4.5 landcruiser petrol ..its a easy job on the cruiser..it all comes down to boost..if you run 7.5 psi or less you will have no trouble.. just dont go silly on the boost..you can run 5psi without any real mods..my kit is cost around 2000...doing all the fab work myself..the people i spoke to say max out of the cruiser at 7.5 is 270kw...why would you bother doing a v8 conversion there a pain in the ass..i have done both...go the charger...
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
i LOVE my blower on my 5.7,BUT everytime I go near water the belt slips like a mofo which equals no boost.. next time round im going for more cubes.. i spent a lot of time in water /mud and want reliable ontap power

a set of 8 rib pullies will help with that
Once you have been blown you won't want to drive anything else again.
(stroked and Blown is even better)
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
The belt on the rear of my blower is 8 rib. Slips like a bitch. Cogged is the only real answer. But can't get them for my set up

Yes you can. I used a HTD belt when developing my supercharger (Me and a mate built it) but we ended up building a gearbox at the rear. HTD's are also used as timing belts. Can be noisier but at full song these blowers arent exactly subtle. There are a range of pulley's you can get but may need to modify them to fit
Here is the early prototype showing the HTB pullies and tensioner.
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
I'll rephrase. No one sells a kit for my blower. I don't want custom. Happy for u to prove me wrong and give me a contact

Talk to Harrop or PWR direct. You can buy the HTD belts at any gates supplier and the pullies from Performance wholesale. There is no "kit" as such but its not hard to convert as its just a pulley change and the belts are widely available. The car will still run with no belt btw. You can also talk to Mark at Powertorque Engines in QLD as they know the blower pretty well. Tell em VooDoo sent you. Do you still have the 6 rib pullies and belt? If so you can send it to me and all see what i can find for you (just need sizes and have a look at the centers to see whats needed to mount the HTD. You can also adjust the blower speed / boost by playing with the rear pullies
BTW, it will sound like a gilmer drive
Re: To super charge or not to super charge.
I talked to magnusun direct and they do a set up for the newer type blower but not the older one
yeah i still have the pulleys and belt.. its on my car lol the belt is only a short tacker its an 8pk560. be good if i could find out the pulley specs without puling the blower off.. its the sort of thing i only wanna do once
