I'm going to build a class 7 off road car. just trying to get an idea as to what shocks i can fit in the rear.
i am looking at fox tripple bypass shocks. the rules state that you have to use the standard shock positions but you can strengthen them. you can modify the shock position only to fit twin shocks.
i've had a look and it looks like they won't fit in there due to the coil being to close to the shock.
has anyone fitted tripple bypass before?
other options i was looking at was two remote res smoothies on each corner.

Why would you need 2 smoothies per corner. If you set it up properly and run hydro bump stops you should easily get away with only one shock per corner.

Have a look at the Class 8 Nifty's car (( GQ wagon ) I know its class 8) But thay are running a single remote res Kings on the rear with a kings bumps and Koni shocks on the front.

I want to do the long course events and dont want to have dramas with the shocks fading half way through the course. I will be using hydraulic bump stops aswell. Its going to have pretty close to standard length shocks on it to keep the car as low as possible.
does nifty have a build up of his car on here or a link to some photos of his rear suspension?

I`ve had a go with some 2.0 king piggy backs but under full compression didn`t have any luck room wise.Remotes could fit but you really won`t see the benifit from the byes.Go a set of 2.0 smoothies on rear and a set of 3.0 smoothies on front.I`ve found it the simplest and cheapest way to get better control on a patrol wilst keeping panards.Most of the bumpstop will be done internally on the shocks so you don`t have to worry abut that either.Cheers Billy

Will the 3.0 smoothies fit in the front without moding the spring tower and shock mount? Other than changing it to suit the eye of a shock rather than a pin i dont i can modify it any more than that unle i run two shocks.

Kings do a patrol kit for the front that is bolt in.

Mate your best bet is to talk to one or a couple of the shock builders and you will need to have,Cornerweights,travel,ridehight and where you want the internal bump to start.This alone will disreguard the need for hydrolic bumps as a shock built right should do that anyway.Alot of shocks that are sold over here are not setup for any particular car and don`t do the job as good as they could.byes for example need the tubes to be welded on the cylender in the right spots according to ride hight and travel ect.Not hard to throw money away for some bling that works slightly better than a standard shock!

im thinking i might go 2.5 smoothies up front and according to the cams rules i can do what ever i want with the fuel tank which should allow room to run 2.5 bypass shocks on the rear. or just some 2.5 smoothies.
i re-read the manual and it doesn't mention anything about the bump stops. but the class 7 patrol i seen on the weekend had bump stops out of the rear of a pajero up front.

2.5 bypass in the rear will hit the coils.
I had to replace the fuel tank cross member with 38mm and move the shock centres further back to fit 2.5s.
this is class 8... 12 inch shocks moved up so the lower mounts are in line with the diff, they were bending.. gives me 10 inches of wheel travel.
forget about the external bypass its not going to happen on the rear.
I run fox 2 inch pro series on the front they work fine with a TD42 and no fade so your TB42 will be fine. they get a lot of cool fresh air so they don't overheat. Just rebuild them more often.
Call Russ at 4x4 and more in Perth, he's set heaps of GQ patrols up with serious shocks.

thanks for the photos. what were you bending? the shock or the mount on the diff? so im better off going with 2.0 smoothies in the rear aswell because i can't modify the shock mounting positions unless im fitting two shocks.

the passenger side lower mount got a whack with a rock which put a cherry sized dent in the front part. then it started twisting itself outward toward the disc.

You could call Brent from wizard performance he has some good kits with fox and is happy to talk to you about what you are chasing.
If you can`t find his number send me a pm.As mentioned in other posts there are some good setups already and because you are restricted anyway by your class it`s as important to get shocks that are the right lenth too long is as bad as too short..

Hey Mike, Do you have the adjustable smoothies? (Not the bypass, just the remote res) I'm not sure of the valving in mine so I have to wait until I get it up and running and just see how it goes with what I've got then adjust the valving from there. I guess I could drop them in to brent but I still don't have final weights for the truck yet. Its going to be pretty light. You could try Xtreme motorsports or if you talk to any off road racing or speed way guys most shoud have pads for each wheel.
You can`t sort of lend these things as any damage is bad and sometimes hard to pick up in inconsistant readings.
Not alot of advantage on a road driver anyway as most are just too heavy(and heavy in the front to bother).Unless you can get it round 2.1-2.6 tonne it would be a waste.To help with a gu just put every thing you can on the back including the bullbar (haha) and you`ll still be front heavy by heaps.All helps though.Cheers Billy

Was only looking at getting corner weight (or front and rear for that matter) to get shock valving set up. When I fork out for a set of Kings, I would like them to be valved to suit my weight, travel, ride height, driving style as closely as possible. Fine tuning for personal feel will always be needed I understand

For sure.
Alot more trucks would get a better result from shocks if the owners checked a few things first before just ordering shocks with a cool sticker on them. I would just use just a certified weigh bridge and weigh fromt and rear in that case.
You should be able to look that up on the net.
Places like grain depots or sand and gravel sales are the places to look.
Just make sure its a certified bridge though as places like dumps ect can vary heaps.Cheers Billy.

Oh and you might already know but in case you don`t you might have to re spring the car too.
You can get away with running a softer coil with stronger shocks and pick up better ride comfort without bodyroll or coilbind.

Internal Bypass sounds like the go.
Please don't take this as a sales pitch or thread hijack (you can if you like) but you may be interested in some coils I am about to bring out for race Patrols.
The idea is to have a comfort ride at ride height but quickly go stiffer in the coil for cornering and jumping the vehicle and at the same time get extra free height in the coil for landing and flex. You could call it the Claytons coil over. The coil over you have when you don't have a coil over.
I have just done a set for a 2" lift but will have them for bigger lifts in the next month or so. Don't go to my web site because you won't find them there for at least a month or 2.
I am working on the rear at the moment. They are made out of 22.4mm wire and they are tapered both top and bottom. It was tapered both top and bottom for 2 reasons. The main reason is because we wanted a rapid change in spring rate so for a regular ute they might have a 250lb spring rate but at 1" compressed they have a 500lb spring rate. The other reason we double tapered them was for more drop when jumping or flex when flexing.
For those who don't know our regular flexy coils are made out of 21mm wire and range from 250lbs up to 400lbs. The 22.4mm coils will actually have a slightly bigger free height so you lose nothing in the flex department. If the vehicle isn't heavy enough you might lose some compression. Because of the tapering they are going to be expensive at $400 a pair for the rears and $300 for the pair when I get the fronts done. They are made out of the best steel. For those who haven't heard Kings have now gone high tensile and this is who we use.
This type of coil would also suit a Ute that is empty one day and has a tonne on it the next.
I am also interested in internal bypass shocks in both remote reservoir and stand alone normal shock and plan to make them ourselves but it will be at LEAST 2 years before testing would be complete. They will be much cheaper, I am hoping $150-$200 for stand alone and $200-$250 for remote reservoir. We will also be setting them up with more travel, in other words, you won't have to space your bump stops out so far. After we master this we will work on making them all in cab adjustable. Until I have a patent which won't happen for at least a year I can't go into how it will be done.

Heaps of flex with the rears at 565mm passenger side, 580mm drivers side for a 3" lift which allows for a 6" shock which is 765mm extended.
I suspect that the front coils won't be that impressive but still more flex then a normal coil. I think if you get more flex then a regular front coil then you have plenty. I will try and remember to post in here when I have more info on the fronts.
Our normal fronts are good for a 5-6" front shocks.

very, very interested in these coils shane, but looking at lighter spring rates than that, the car will be well under 2 tons. currently using 19mm wire dual rate lovells in the rear and some yellow things in the front but that was with full bodywork. looking at only 2-3 inch lift so if you do a very light 2 inch version it will help.
also my shock pressures add some spring, it lifts about 20mm with 200 psi in the rear shocks because of the 7/8 shafts.
