what suspention does everythink best for an 80

hey guys ive got an 80 and its pritty stock atm 2'' lift thats bout it which is 4 years old,
and want to start setting it up for touring and some pritty good 4x4ing like up cape ,simpson,
high country ect was thinking a 3'' lift? what does every 1 recomend , cheers nathan

keep the 2" lift and fit lockers

my 105series, 2" lift, lockers front and rear. It surprizes me were it will go, its been everywere my 80 with 4"lift went

looks nice yer thats good idea have thought that but just want it to sit higher my 2'' looks like stock hight want more clearance, and will have to get sliders and scrub bars

Id go 3inch with chopped guards, 35s on custom offset rims and lockers. That setup will get you anywhere just about

You don't want 35's if you plan on setting it up as a tourer. If springs are sagged you could always throw some coil spacers in and a set of 33's with a locker or 2 and you will be laughing.

I'm in the same situation, want it set up for touring and the current suspension is a few years old and the 80 is starting to get a bit overweight. With just the draws in the back full it's already dragging its arse. So my question is what would be a good load rating for an overweight 80 that will mOst likely see a bit Of towing. I've seen some kits that are rated to 100kg front and 400kg rear. Will these kits still be capable off road when it's not fully loaded? Or do I just jam a locker in it get get used to driving with no flex.

I would just put some good tyres on it (not overkill in size), a couple of inches of lift and decent coils and shocks that suit your kitted out vehicle (if daily driver go softer coils with Poly airs, otherwise HD springs that handle your laden weight)

Then learn how to drive the vehicle. I can take a disco with stock suspension and A/T tires the same places a 4 inch lifted cruiser can go by driving the vehicle appropriately (i.e good wheel placement and driving with my head not the right foot) Okay so I also have a well worked cruiser as well but its main benefit is when taking the vehicle places vehicles were never designed to go and maybe a little abuse...

Call suspensionstuff and have a chat to them, awesome service and good quality gear. Adjustable shocks are great but in my experience can have a very short life and a short warranty to match. Your problem is you want the best of both world but touring and weekend warrior require a very different setup so you will have to settle in the middle somewhere.

To give an idea the dobinsons are stiff shocks and suit my car with the tuff dog 5 inch lift perfectly. I also have dobinsons coils to match shocks. Have found efs to be way too soft for a large cruiser. Old man emu are pretty good for a cruiser and any adjustable on a medium to hard setting. Mines a daily driver running the before mentioned suspension setup with 35 inch maxxis bighorns and it drives better than my brothers gq (lifted to same height as my car) but with tuff dog all round, but still not really bad. Dads 75 series however was good on old man emission but now is nearly undrivable on efs shocks (standard height).

I did the simpson crossing with standard coils & did have ANY problem's.
Now it's got 2" coils & 285/75/16 MT ATZ 4ribs

ive got superflex arms in the front of mine. they arent a bad compromise

it was in issue 170, which was a few months ago now.

running 4" flexy coils front, 5" flexy rears, SRC shocks front with superflex arms, have relocated my rear arms so they now sit flat, which has also pushed the diff rearwards a bit, and running 2.5" profender smoothie's.

That all said crankys is no tourer wagon? I personally don't think flexy arms are needed when you plan on touring, I have a 105 with 4" lift with castor correction running 285/75/16 mtz tires. Nice to drive, not too tall. If your going remote try to stick to common tire sizes if you require one it could be a couple days wait for an odd size!

Oh my mistake, I forgot I just drove it 16000k touring up the east coast to the cape. It's done more "touring"in the last 12 months than most "tourers".

Since ive been up the cape, its done what ppl classify as the "cape trip" no less than 4 times, been to the top twice, and as there is no "hard core " 4wding up here, i spend a lot of time exploring the gravel roads (done well over 10k since i have been here) which is what "touring" is all about isnt it??


Roof top tent, 2 fridges, a 22" flip down tv and a kitchen, I'd say thats tourer enough for me.

Yes there is more body roll but its not too bad, I would attribute most of my body roll to the big tyres being run at 25psi on the gravel, also I run a HD sway bar in the arse (none in the front) and that brings it back to a very respectable level. On a lower 4bie there will be even less body roll (mine does only have 4" spring but has a body lift).

I'd really like to get hold of a multi valve TD sahara, and if i do it will be running 305's, 3-4" spring, super flex arms, some woop arse shocks and maybe some rear arm tweaking. That is my version of a good "daily" up here.

Thats the safest bet keep it simple & Toddog's work mates wont need to find you & defect it.
Not to mention what would happen insurance wise if your involved in a accident.

I had fitted just before xmas a 3" dobinson kit to my 80.
It has made a huge difference both on and off road compared to the crap iron man 2" kit that was in it when i got it.

The flex I am getting now is great and it is still very good on the road as I put 2 degree castor correction in as well. I am running 305/70/16's bighorns and it is driven every day. In the last year it has done 30000 klm's, 75% on the blacktop and it has been great

I would recommend the dobinsons stuff any day of the week

Is the kit load rated or is it the flexi coils? What is it rated to? Any chance of a pic?
