Recommend a transmission for BBC in a truck
G'day folks
I have a tow vehicle project that i'm building, and i've got a motor purchased but need to choose a gearbox.
It's a C30 dual rear wheel chassis, so GVM will be 4.5t and the GCM will be near to 8 tonne, maybe more.
I'll be running a 454 big block on gas, and i want a manual for the engine braking when pulling up big loads going down the range. Someone mentioned a 4L60E or 4L80E but i was under the impression that the lock up converter didn't work under a certain speed.?
So recommend a gearbox. I'm happy to run an oil cooler by the way.
Here's the requirements
5 speed minimum, preferably 6
decently low first gear
able to be bolted up to chev pattern, or at least have availability of adaptors
able to deal with not only the potential torque of a big block, but the GCM that it's going to haul.
Some have suggested a T6060 Tremec 6 speed as found behind monaros, pontiac big blocks and some falcons. I can get one brand spankers out ofthe states for 3k, and that will have the internal oil cooler pump with it.
But while it's proven behind modern big blocks, i'm wondering if the size vehicle will matter?

TR-6060's are put behind 8.3L dodge vipers too so should cope with the torque. May as well just run a viper engine while you're at it haha
4l80e can be manualised to offer some compression braking. Only issue is the tall 1st gear of 2.48.

What about the Allison 5 speeds behind the likes of the duramax etc??
Alternatively, there's been a popular conversion for the isuzu powered landies recently that makes use of an NPR 5 speed transmission. Perhaps the trucks may have something suitable at a decent price.

Any idea how huge the NPR box is? I had wondered if Nissan UD trucks shared the same bolt pattern as a nissan patrol. Then i could use a marks conversions for chev into nissan.

turbo 400 with a shift kit, they have great engine braking for an auto

Use a GQ /GU 5speed and leave the t case on it so you have low range for getting in and out of those tight spots adaptors are cheep and you can get a GQ box for next to free and they are as tuff as any thing else that would be my option.

Matt Dunk has a patrol box behind his big block'd F350 and he says while it's held together it gets bastard hot when hauling big time.
Once this thing is in i NEVER want to touch it again. EVER.
I agree the low range is a great plus for reversing and moving around for sure.
I did a quick google search and a NV4500 can be had remanufactured for 1200 US.
That's not bad in my books, i wonder what shipping would work out at?

3400 for the box alone, still got to get it here to oz. No lock up converter. Manually selected any way so what's the point of an auto.

You could try to get a peek at the UD boxes at a truck wrecker. The bell housing bolts from the inside and has 3 bolts on each side of a GQ//U box spaced at about 100-150mm above each other and on each side of the box you should see the bulge of each bolt on the outside of the box. You can have the one sitting in my shed with the transfer on it if you Scanas yourself out to help me build my truck. It won't be easy and you'll probably never walk straight again......... Oh wait. You don't walk straight now.

I"m still learning a lot about these bloody spark plug motors.
I've heard that the LSx series engines have a different measurement from BH face to input shaft or summat.
As for the rest of the big block and small block engines are they all the same for fitment of clutches and bellhousings?

do you know that they have 8.1l gm blocks with alllison 6 spd trans standard in some 3500 chevs but a fully built box to handle 800hp will cost $5000
