My mates got an 81 diesel troopy and is having problems getting it out of 3rd gear. Sometimes he has to double clutch it and sometimes it takes 3 or 4 goes 2 get it out.
Any ideas what the problem could be
Thanx

it could be the synchroniser ring is so badly worn that it gets misaligned and stops the shift dog from floating propery, it could be worn bearings, worn shift fork or dog, worn shift rails, it could be as simple as the plastic seat under the shifter is worn out.
is the gearbox noisy, or hard to shift in other gears? does it crunch on down changes?
start with the plastic shifter seat (pull off the boots, remove the shifter by pushing the ring down and simultaneously twisting counterclockwise, lift the shfter out), if that doesn't fix it, drop the oil and look for metal flakes and gold/brass filings through the oil, fill with ATF and take it for a drive (50km, enough to warm the transmission up), drop the ATF and refill with gear oil. if a flush and resh oil doesn't help it, he'll porbably have to drop the gearbox and have it overhauled.

It's the 4 speed gearbox
The truck has done just over 3000 000km and I can tell u it gets a flogging Hes bloody savage on the clutch 2
Someone said it could be a clutch problem but I dont think he has any problems with the other gears
Thanx for the imfo Brian, I'll pass it on

Automatic Transmission Fluid
it's nice and runny and has good high pressure lubrication characteristics so it can flush gunk out of your gearbox without damaging it like if you flush it with kero or similar.

three million km?????
it's possible it could be the clutch not disengaging properly, but more likely to manifest itself in all gears, especially when trying to get it into reverse. if it crunches reverse all the time then adjusting the clutch could help, 4 speed 40's have an adjuster on the clutch slave cylinder finger doodad, you need to make it shorter if the clutch is the problem.
