6V92 turbo?
Quick question for the diesel experts, I have a 6v92 Detroit in an old denning coach. It gets along ok but a tad more power to keep up a little better on the hills would be nice. I know later ones were turboed/supercharged and were the base for the DDEC incarnations later on down the track but would an old N/A version respond well in standard form to some mild boost? I understand the factory turbo variation came with a t6, unsure of the specs but I figure the way it sits in the bus would lend itself well to a twin set up with a couple of t4 variations. Any ideas??

I have heard of guys putting turbos on 6V53's that were factory NA.
But i've also heard that heard they're a bit conservative about it. I was looking at screamers for a while for the Chev but a few things put me off. I wish i could remember where i found all the info. I do know a lot of the american truck/one ton/modifications forum had a lot of guys playing around and doing swaps and performance upgrades. In fact jump on 4btswaps.com and have a chat to a guy on there with a user name "griggs". He's very cluey about DD's and also on the HCVC forum here in oz there's a couple of very knowledgable DD guys as well
Can you source factory turbo heads perhaps? I think it's the only difference.
The main problem i found with two stroke diesels was that they're getting so long in the tooth now that finding good heads and blocks that aren't cactus is getting expensive.

Thanks Milo, I'll try over there and see what I come up with. The best I seem to come up with is blokes using the turbo of turboed models on has big blocks and merits of the 6v92ta over the 8v71ta. Motor seems strong, factory standard leaks still work perfectly, small puffs of smoke on gear changs and blows a bit on the hills.
Jaztaz do they rev to 2600 reliably? I seem to recall 2100 is standard? Is all that's needed the bigger squirters? Any idea what gains you get and fuel usage? Currently bout 15t gets 3ish to the litre of a 6 speed box........... Geez an overdrive would be nice too

I have worked on the 6v53 bronze series and the 6v53t silver series DD engines. Besides internal differences the 6v53t has a blower bypass valve as the turbo will out spool the blower. The injectors are different but this can be found from dd website from memory. I can't remember the exact size of the turbo fitted but i think it was equivalent to a t6 garret, without a waste gate. I have found that if in tune they are a good reliable engine that is very heavy on fuel. I'm not sure what turbo would be a good size for your application or if a na is capable of the turbo upgrade. The Na does have higher compression ratio and does not have piston oil squirters as compared to the turboed version (from memory).

Thanks mate, I managed to catch up with the mechenic at work to quiz him, turns out he spent 20 years with Detroit ....... Score ........ He has the Detroit "bible" at home and is going to check a few things but he reckons the turbo version difference is basically the turbo and as above the bypass on the blower.
Reckons it prolly has gp75s on it, can go to the 90s no probs but any work will lower engine life expedentially. Can make the 350hp on a road engine no probs bit won't last. Reckons you'll get 300k out of a na engine before liners and a rebuild . By the time that comes round I reckon I could work a Volvo 380 9ltr and auto in to it real nice

Don't quote me on this as I'm a Cat trained fitter but some of the log trucks we ran in Tassie had 8V92ta engines in them rated at 425hp from memory. 100mm injectors up from standard 85mm (I think) & the extra revs gave you close to 500hp. Horrid fuel comsuption & reliability but nobody cared when it's a race to the top of the hill against V8 Macks, ATAAC Cats & the like. Lol nah I meant I'll give the boss the screamer and I'll take the cat. It's in the 604 I'm driving, engine is under 12 months old, brand new crate, was told it was the last in aus...... Might wait till he does the tune and hot set before I steal it though

you could do it but you need the blower and governor assembly too as the govenor is set up to keep the fuel/air the same. also the blower has a bypass valve in it. As long as you dont go chasing massive power and your engine is in a decent condition it will be ok. I did my apprenticeship with detroit and we have done this conversion on an 8v92 in a boat.
