HDJ100 Live Axle Conversion - Possible?

Post by me3@neuralfibre.com »

I see plenty of people dropping 1HD-FTE engines into 105's, but I see no-one dropping a live axle under a HDJ100.

Is this conversion possible? I see it often enough in Hilux's. I figure someone must have done it.

The 105 chassis does have a rise in it at the front - I suspect this may be a reason, but that's only a guess.

I think correct, a mob has done in in the USA, but I think it was expensive, difficult and compromised due to the different chassis. Easier and cheaper to do the engine conversion.

Look up the conversion sleeoffroad did. Only problem is you have to run 5" lift to clear sump. Unless you mod it.

Anything is possible given the funds. Hasnt been done that i know of in AU though so getting past engineering might be fun. Chassis is a different width in the HDJ compared to the HZJ

From the bits I have read, Slee found it a mission, with lots of issues to overcome.
Much simpler to do an engine conversion rather than reinvent the wheel.

I did find that article. Looks interesting, but he wasn't willing to use a 105 or 7x diff - wanted something bigger and stronger.

The article also talks about track width, but I;m not sure that is correct. Track width is a function of the wheel & tyre, not just the hub width I thought.

I thought the sump and enginge placement was the same between the cars, meaning the chassis and steering arrangements would be the biggest issues.

I agree though, does sound very challenging. Bugger. :(

I figured as it was common with the hilux's, there might be a parallel with the cruiser.

track is a combination of hub width and wheel offset, but if you want the same wheels front to back(who doesn't?), all you are really concerned with is the hub width of the replacement diff housing matching the existing rear.

I had a look under my 100series and 80 series chassis on the weekend and i think its possible. the chassis is actually very different at the front, which means just swapping a 105 diff in is not an option.

Will mean fabbing up full suspension from a bare housing, but as you said there are plenty of hilux's that have done it.

I'm guessing the chassis is "flat" and has no rise for the axle?

Can you tell if it's in line with the chassis under the body or lower?
