Hey peeps
Just a couple questions regarding putting a gu steering box in a Gq, I've searched quite a bit and haven't found the answer I'm after. Will a gu box make the steering lighter? When ever I've driven a gu the steering feels lighter than mine in the Gq. Or could it be that my power steer is not performing?
Anyone who has does the swap, it would be great to hear from your experiences
And are the power steer pumps different at all? Smaller pulley?

Re: Another gu steering box in Gq
The main difference is that the box is stronger. Not really much difference in how they perform. Best thing to do is make sure you have good clean oil and a good cooler and you'll get better performance.

Re: Another gu steering box in Gq
I have GU diffs and a GU box on my GQ and the steering stayed the same, no noticeable difference.
If you want lighter steering get a bigger steering wheel.
I think the GU does have a differently geared/pully'd pump though.

Re: Another gu steering box in Gq
I have the GQ2 steering box (1995 -1997) which is bigger than the older GQ, and looks much the same as the GU one but with a different pitman arm. Its original with 260K Kms and previously had a 2.8td but the steering was ok
The first GQ TD42 pump after engine change, had a large pulley on it and steering was a bit heavy. (maybe it was worn too)
I bought a GU TD42T pump and the steering is a fair bit lighter and it has a smaller pulley. So much nicer to drive - parking is much easier.
I can measure both of these pulleys if it helps you out.
cheers

Re: Another gu steering box in Gq
I put a GU steering box into my GQ two months ago. I have a small Pulsar N14 steering wheel and noticed that the steering was a bit stiffer than with the GQ box, but not to a point that it is a problem. I can't comment on the internals of the GQ and GU pump, but the pulley on the GU pumps is definately a bit smaller than the one on the GQ pump.
