mech diesel timing + turbos

Post by shorty_f0rty »

hey fella's,

when I put my 3b in I had to remove the injector pump to replace a welsh plug that was hiding behind it. in doing that I think I affected my timing as the angle the injector pump sits relates to the timing.. since then I've thrown a turbo on and its not really as good as I expected it to be so i'm wondering if its because the timing could be out.

Whats the deal with timing on a diesel, Ive been told that you notice more noxious gases when its not timed right..

Do you need to adjust timing when you fit a turbo.

And lastly are there any shops that will just fix the timing on a diesel? I remember ringing a diesel shop before but they talk of doing a full injector pump rebuild if they are doing the timing .. Any recommendation of shops in brisbane is appreciated.

Thanks.

Andrew

There was a mob out at Goodna who tuned my turbo when i first put it on. They came highly recommended.

Essentially.

Too far advanced sounds rough, gives crisper response but can smoke black if gone too far.
Too far retarded is hard to start, gives doughier response and smokes white if you hit the extremes.

By trial and error you can find a pretty good setting. More retarded gives more energy out the exhaust to spool the turbo.

Going too far advanced can also give very high EGT's which is not good for turbo life.
If you don't have a boost compensator on your pump, bit of black smoke when you first put your foot down is ok, but should stop once the turbo spools up.

More advanced gives lower EGT. It is more retarded that raises EGT. Generally your turbo will handle a hotter tune than your pistons will.

I follow on the retarded timing giving high EGT's due to the fuel still burning on the exhaust stroke, but wouldn't advanced timing be just as bad with ignition occuring pre-TDC? Detonation and pre-ignition is baaaad last time i checked

Ignition always starts before TDC. The goal is to hit maximum pressure just after top dead centre. Diesels don't detonate unless something is badly wrong, but if you inject way too early you get black smoke as the cylinder is hot enough to charr the fuel to carbon without burning it completely. You also get a lot of noise as peak pressure gets really close to TDC. Advance too far and you lose power too. With a bit of trial and error it's not too hard to find a suitable setting.

I ran the whole range of timing on my Isuzu and ended up back at the factory marks. Guess those japanese engineers knew a thing or two. Mine is factory turbo though, the OP has added a turbo.

Well my timing shouldn't be hugely out I wouldn't think.. Before I removed the injector pump I used a liquidpaper pen to mark the case, instead of a chisel.. so any timing changes would only be +/- 2-4mm at most..

In my 80series, (factory turbo) I found a couple of mm shift from the factory marks made quite a difference when measuring timing and pump stroke with a dial gauge. I marked mine with a sharp scriber as the factory mark was a bit wide and vague.

Nah, not really.

any way, back to the tech :D
