Tyre recommendations?
The tyres on the 100 series are just about flogged, and I want to get people's opinions on what to replace them with.
Also, can someone explain the sizing to me? I am only cluey with imperial tyre measurements.
The markings on the tyres are 265/70 R17, and 112/109 R. From those numbers, what is the rim size? They are 100 series Sahara stock alloy rims.
They are BFG ATs, but I am open to suggestions for other options, keeping in mind that it is 95% on road, and stock in terms of lift.
Also, can anyone recommend a Western Sydney tyre joint that doesn't cost shitloads?

The first number, 265, is the "section width" - the width across the sidewalls at their widest point when installed on the nominal rim width (probably 7"?)
The second number, 70, is the "aspect ratio" expressed as a percent. This is the ratio between section width and sidewall height.
R17 indicates it's radial construction, to suit a 17" rim.
112/109 R is load and speed rating. The first load number (112) indicates the load rating when the tyre is installed as a single, as in your case. Around 1200kg per tyre, at max inflation. The second number is the load rating per tyre when installed on "dual wheels" (i.e. two wheels per corner), and is lower because duals don't dissipate heat as well. From memory, 109 is 1040kg per tyre, or 2080kg per corner (dual install), again at maximum pressure. I have NFI about the R speed rating, but it's fast enough. If you drive a 100 series faster than that I think you deserve to have tyre problems.
At a guess (haven't broken out a calculator) I would say your tyres are around 32" overall diameter. In old money, roughly 32x10.5R17.

I do plan on doing some outback drives next year, or certainly during the life of the next tyres, so I guess I should look at something heavier.

Don't rely on "LT" (Light Truck) tyres to be higher rated - look for the load rating.
My father has Bridgestone Duellers on his 95 series Prado, in 265/75R16 LT (roughly the same overall size as yours, and nominally "Light Truck"). It was only on our last trip away that I realised his load rating was the same as yours. All good at highway pressures, but remember that load rating drops with tyre pressure, and I've never seen a chart to help workout how they derate. So are the tyres overloaded when he's driving offroad at lower pressures? Who knows? Most LT tyres in that size have load ratings round 122, or 1500kg per tyre.
The other issue with his tyres is max inflation pressure. My father has a method he uses for working out what pressure to set whenever he breaks out his compressor, and coming home from our last trip away, he was merrily pumping all his tyres up to 54psi - except the sidewall states max pressure should be 50psi.

I just got Khumo KL71 for mine last week. Very quite for a muddie on the road and pretty chunkie. I like them so far but proberly not what you are after. I'd go a 285x75 if I was you.

Mate you cant go past Mickey T ATZ's, Ive got experience with both 4 and 5 rib and both are excellent tyres, I'd probly go the 5 rib just cos its got a bit more rubber on the road seeing as yours is 95% on road. The old boy got better fuel economy from his 5 ribs too.

coopers should stop spending money on advertising, many friends never got the km they warant them for.
3 navaras all crappy kms out of their set of tyres.
2 were farmers, one a trady hardly ever off road last guy.

now have Khumo MT KL71
the mickeys were good, had a fairly loud tire humm but ok the Khumos so far are great good cleaning pattern not very loud considering the aggressive pattern and seem to be wearing well (just put 20000kms) on them and at $100 ea cheaper than a MTZ very happy

Coopers spend big on advertising and the fine print on that garentee is very limited.
Stop in at a few tyre places on way to or from work in your area and ask there, they not only sell but should know what comes back in bits and not round.
There is a bit on the search function as well, both here and on individual brand sites.
17" may be a bit limited in more rural types of tyre.
Im happy with the hankook at on front and toyo transpath rear at present but dont need that combination in future as not liveing past miles of national park roads now, will replace toyos with same as front when worn out,
A lot is individual preference for most conditions, big chunkys tend to wear fast, highway pattern tend to spin on wet grass.

I'm a big fan of Coopers, but I've never been the slightest bit interested in the warranty - essentially, if you plan to use the tyres offroad, forget the warranty.
I do take my tyres offroad, and I've had no issues with S/Ts, MT/Rs, STTs, and currently ST Maxx.
Did anybody spot the non-Cooper tyre in the middle there?
I don't buy Coopers for the warranty. I buy them because I like the way they perform offroad. YMMV.

I started off with duelers and hated them, then i went cooper STT's in 33x12.5 and was quite impressed by them got great kms (45,000kms of hard 4wd'n use) grippy on and off road and ok in the mud, then had goodyear wranglers mtr's 32's did 35,000kms and sold them with approx 40-45% tread then i went same tyre in a 315/75 R16 (35's) old style MTR's.. which are ok but not overly impressed
I must say the coopers STT's are my choice but having said that i have limited experience, i will buy STT's again next set i would go st maxx but they dont make them in 315x75 r16

Ive clocked up over 50 000 ks on bfg km2's ( new design mud terrain) on my my troopy and they still have at least 20 000 k's in them. They are dead quiet, handle fantastic on the road, grip amazing off road and bag out real well when the pressure is dropped. Theyre in 33 12.50 15 though. But I can tell you now they are bloody brilliant if your after a good lasting mud terrain

Had the last model STT's before the current softer ones to reduce the lud tears, wore very well with close to 60,000km on them and still 8mm tread left. Currently got MTR's and after my last wheel a little worried as they seemed to wear a lot, will have to wait and see.
