40 series rubber inserts?

Hi,
Im spending a lot of time and effort cleaning up and painting all the panels from the front of my hj47 and i am noticing that where they touch each other is where they rust. When i put it all back together i want it to last a long time. I was thinking of getting some rubber strapping and sandwhiching it between all the panels. However this means there will be a few extra mill here and there so nothing will line up anymore. Getting the bonnet etc to line up is a bitch to start with I dont really want to make it harder.
What have you guys done and did it work?

Wow, yours line up? The 40 I am rebuilding has parts off so many different era's of 40's I will be surprised if anything lines up.

I am similarly looking at making some rubber inserts though I wonder if the same issues will occur anyways

Hey Tasman, I had a look on ebay searching for "40 series rubber" and got nowhere. There is no landcruiser part for what Im talking about its more of a clark rubber thing.
Im thinking maybe some sikaflex product would be the go anyway.

I ended up going to Clark rubber vying it off the role putting some lanoline inbetween the rubber and the metal is an extra thing that I did to help the situation

sika do a specifically auto adhesive for fixing panels and bits.

quite literally you could modernise the old girl and glue the whole thing together lol. it would be nice n rigid and not rub any more.

The rubber bits you mean will be quite thick as in 2mm approx and might bugger up alignment as you say.

What about a 1mm strip of a sika product, allowed to dry before assembly to creat a metal - metal buffer. you could make up a little scraper with a 1mm grove in it so you get an even strip left behind.

I think he is more worried about where the apron joins the head light surround. We all have the same problem. But regarding the idea to glue them and make them more rigid, I wouldn't go down this path as my thought has always been that they need to move separately. But I have been wrong before. I would just put in a small amount of rubber just like you should have between the guard and the tub.

Thanks clankey but thats not quite what Im after. I think using sika is not really a solution either as loosecannon pointed out the whole thing needs to be flexible i think its only a matter of time before it cracks of and lets moisture in. Im thinking some very thin rubber tape and I like the lanolin grease idea. On the rigs we used to have scoth tape which was a thin black electrical tape I need somethin like that but not so stretchy.

i just bought a sheet of 1mm rubber, a texta and a hole punch kit and sat down one afternoon with all the mounts and cut some out. suprisingly came up neat somehow? hahaha just takes some time.

double sided tape? but with only one side ripped off? I wouldn't worry too much about it. But put a bit of pressure pack on when needed. I can't really see a permanent solution for you mate. I can't only think of a little bit of soft rubber.

I think its just one of the design faults on these great old trucks that ill have to put up with. I guess ill just have to do it all again in 30 years. Thats ok. Im sure the old 2h will still be going strong.
