Winch Truck Rules.

Can someone tell me where i can find chassis, suspension, driveline specifications for winch truck style racing. What i need to know is what mods im aloud to do regarding chassis, suspension and driveline. I have a GQ extra cab and would like to run custom cruiser style radius arms and twin shocks and all that stuff.

Look up winch truck challenge home page it has rules and regs on it or cams or ccda maybe.

Im in Brissy mate, so i'd only really be competing in QLD events. I'd like to know if i can make my own extended (raised) shock towers (out of tube) and custom longer cruiser style radius arms and all that stuff.

If you run open class there won't be any problem at all in doing those mods,, heaps of guys run custom strengthened shock mounts and hoops for

Just a quick question - how is it that all of these events require registration - yet you can also have coilovers and modified mounts?
Is there someone doing mod plates in QLD for these items now?
Will the company approve long armed and custom linked cars? There are a number of 4 link reared cars racing in Winch Comps - are these approved?

Just I'd love to put Coilovers on my car but can't find an engineer that has any interest in approving them.

Short answer - NO

All the mods that you are talking about cannot be plated (legally) unless approved by transport first, then they will issue you the paper work to get plated. There are no Codes available for the mods that you are talking about.

XWC does not require rego (as long as I can get insurance) have just paid my dues for the next year

So Digsy if you want to put them on your car fill out Form 1854 and submit it to Transport with all the details, keep us informed if you do :) :)

MMM - I talked to a Engineer on the sunny coast - who intially seemed quite interested and said that it was possible... He was a guy that worked with engineering vehicle extensions and mods like 100series ute conversions etc.
Then after a little bit of to & fro - he seemed to loose interest quickly in the idea telling me it's not worth his time...
I was prepared to pay if it was legit and legal - however I assume that he must have worked out it is not...

Bit of a shame - cause as we all know - a properly built 4x4 - engineered correctly - is safer than most of the "Dunger" 4Bs getting around on 2" springs... I wish we were like USA in that respect where if it passes the requirements (swerve test, approved welding, etc) we should be able to build what we REALLY want to drive!

Ahhhhhhh - the land of the free......




However I don't envy anything else...! :?

Digsy, the way I did it and I assume most of the other boys do it is buy a 4wd then get it rego'd, build it into a comp truck and then make sure the rego never lapses. Or know somebody who will do you dodgy roadworthys.

My new BJ42 is all approved with 4 link rear and coilovers all round. But coilovers were plated before some rules changed a few years ago.

Question 1:- did you get an approval letter from vehicle standards for the 4 link? If not that blue plate is worth nothing, because there is no code for that mod under the Light Vehicle Code or the Heavy Vehicle Code for that matter.

Question 2:- again, is there an approval from vehicle standards for the coil overs? If not, the same comments as above.

Just remember Blue Plates are only good if they are done correctly and if Transport say it is not correct, you have wasted a lot of money on something you cannot drive.

And for your information live axle's into IFS cannot be complied unless having a letter from Vehicles Standards, engineers or approved persons cannot put a blue plate on this modification due to the fact there is no Code in Light or Heavy Vehicle Code of Practice.

Don't get me wrong I am just trying to protect you guys out there from handing over good dollars for a Blue Plate that will fail if Transport get you.

I would advise anyone to call Vehicle Standards for all tricky mods.

Sorry to dig up an old thread,

Just want to clarify this topic, use the guys running in Cliffhanger, OBC etc as an example, there trucks are obviously modified from mild to wild, do they need to have their trucks 'roadworthied' after their mods eg. suspension/chassis/engine conversions/mods, or do they get a rego on their trucks first, take it home an crank out the grinders an welders, chop chop chop do their mods and then trailer their trucks everywhere there after and never let the rego lapse? Are these mods checked at event scruitineering for legalities?

Not sure on the rear 4-link but transport is happy with the codes on the plate, 2 trucks have been inspected by transport, and passed. Remember though these were new model hiluxes so it was a change from leaf to coil.

Coilovers on the front were allowed on the SAS because the new model hiluxes run them from factory in the IFS, the engineer said NO to coilover rear.

I believe Buddy now has a new engineer as his old one retired, so who knows now.

I know in Victoria not sure about other states most of the guys just rego their trucks and then not let the rego lapse and trailer it and hope for no defects.

Cliffhanger don't require rego. OBC hasn't been around for a few yrs now & when the new event gets sorted I think it won't require rego either.
Rego requirements is almost dead (& lets face it .... a joke) so I wouldn't be too concerned.

I would love to know what Codes were used, because if it was plated before the 1st November I still stand by my comments. Unless a letter of approval was signed off by Vehicle Standards the Blue Plate is worthless if shit hits the fan.
