2.8 diesel hilux issues
Hey guys. I have a hilux with a 2.8 n/a diesel in it. Had it for a few years and done some mods like SAS conversion and other bits and peices pretty much everything has been recoed apart from the motor and rear diff. Since I moved back to Newcastle the car has been chewing fuel. Over the last couple of tanks it's started really getting bad but I can't find Any leaks around fuel tank, lines of injector pump. The motor had 330xxx km's and when I'm driving up hills following other lux's it just won't keep up power wise and usually starts ticking after really giving it some. Before I go and get the motor rebuilt is there anything I can try to fix these problems. It doesn't seem to have big end rattles when first started but I ain't no mechanic but before I go spending crap loads on a rebuild I thought IDE ask the questions and see if there could be anything to look for. Cheers guys
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Is the motor using oil? Water? Heating up? Blowing unusual amount of smoke?

Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Not using any oil or water. Not over heating or anything else but rattling after really pushing it up hills.

Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Dirty fuel pump / injectors is.quite common also check / replace.timing belt.
93 RV, 5 in tough dog lift, dobinsons shocks and coils, PA, dual fuel, many many oil leaks and a ton of character.
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Thanks fellas. I was told when I bought the car the timing belt was done only a couple of thousand km's before I bought it. There were receipts but it was also meant to have a rebuilt alternator and all new brakes and these were the first thing that gave way. I was chatting to a friend last night that gave me the same advice. Get the injectors and pump done and get someone to check under the timing cover and see if it's timed right and if it needs a kit.
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Turns out there is some funky looking shreds of platic of some sort coming out from under the timing cover. Mechanic will be ripping it down on Tuesday to see whAts goin on and I'll get the injector done and injector pump upped the 10 percent for a turbo kit. Cheers for the ideas fellas. I'll update with a cause for my issues
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Hey mate just wondering if you found out what the problem was? I have a similiar problem with mine
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
I got the timing kit done and new harmonic balancer. Got the Injector system flushed and it has seemed to idle better and I got an extra 40 km's out of the last tank but hasn't been long enough to tell weather it was just the fuel I got or weather it really has done anything. I am getting a turbo kit bolted up next week and an exhaust system done and then I will go and get the injector pump and injectors over hauled and I'll see what happens after that. Hope that helps a little.
Re: 2.8 diesel hilux issues
Have you done an oil change? 3L engines are renowned for glugging up causing poor lubrication and eventually big end failure, next time you do an oil change make sure there is at least 5ltrs that comes out, if not that will indicate a problem like the oil has broken down and turned into a jelly like substance, if this has happened you can flush it with diesel or remove the sump and clean thoroughly.
