80 series diesel (fuel issue)

Post by builtlux88 »

Gday i have

1994 gxl 1hz NA diesel

i have only had the car for a few months now.

it first happened when i was goin up a hill towing a small caravan at about 80km/hr in 3rd gear giving it a hard time ,it was as if the car was running out of fuel/missing and then when i got to the top of the hill it was all good.

my first thought was dirty fuel so when i got home i changed all the old fuel with new stuff and replaced the fuel filter and then drove it bout 3000k over easter and no dramas,

now in the last week it has happened a few times only when putting my foot down in 3rd and 4th trying to gain speed to merge on the high way.

i spoke to a mate and he said if the motor is running out of fuel i can put a second fuel filter on so i have double the amount on hold but i dont think this is the case as the motor is standard.

what are ppl's thoughts, im thinking injector pump rebuild maybe but never done one so not sure

I used to have the same issue, and i thought it was a small air leak somewhere, however after testing i couldn't find any. Anyway what my next assumption was maybe i had to much slip in the fuel pump (within the injector pump) and fitted a low pressure, low volume electric lift pump. I never had a problem after installing it. Also it made priming a lot easier.

I had the same problem and I changed the filters and flushed the system but still happened until I changed the in tank strainer/filter on the end of the fuel pickup.

is your air filter clean? I find my 1HZ really struggles if the air cleaner is overdue for a change, or if its been driven in dusty conditions. I also find Genuine filters are much better, worth paying a few extra $ for IMO
I currently have a Ryco air filter in mine, its only been in for a few weeks and I have the check air filter light coming on when pushing it up hills :bad-words:
