91 4runner loosing water
hi all, new to the forum.
I have a 91 4runner, 2.8L diesel, about 330k km and it is loosing water from the side of the block where it meets the head and there is a rubber grommet that looks like a semi circle
any help i could get regarding some replacement parts and hoping to find a useable service manual as the only ones i can find online do not include the 3L engine would be greatly appreciated
i am looking at trying to do the rebuild myself due to lack of funds
thanks

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
I have scoured the net and still can't find much on the 3l engine. Even just an exploded view would help greatly if anyone has anything

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
Maybe get a pic of the offending area.
Have you looked on 4x4wire?? They have lots of info about all things.

I could've but I can't remember that name. I have looked at that many sites in the past week trying to figure out what I'm up against.
I'll post a photo as soon as I get enough posts up to show the area with the problem
Thanks mark

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
Thanks jcas. There was an answer posted before the site dropped out for a bit. And I haven't filled it since I bought it last July apart from topping up the coolant bottle with coolant
Re: 91 4runner loosing water
Is it worth replacing all the welsh plugs while I have the injection pump off to replace the rusted one?
Also is there any other maintenance that I should think of in that area now that I am going to have parts removed?

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
I would replace them all even the one on the back of the engine which means taking it out removing the flywheel and sandwich plate to access it. Make sure you get brass or stainless plugs.

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
They're a couple of dollars each if ones on the way out chances are others will be too. Just do them all.
What do we want? TIME TRAVEL! When do we want it? THAT'S IRRELEVANT!
Re: 91 4runner loosing water
Was more than likely going to replace the ones on each side. But the one at the back sounds like a bit of a task.
I'm also looking at introducing a turbo to the engine soon so was thinking of replacing all radiator hoses aswell as injectors and glow plugs. Is this a good idea or should I just leave what's not broken?

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
If the hoses are gettin a bit soft or ratty looking its worth changing them and keeping the old ones as spares. Also a good idea to give the radiator a good flush and take it out for a decent wash of the vanes as the turbo will add a bit more heat to the mix. Also good to check the condition of the heater hoses too as these can let go unexpectantly too, plus you will be teeing off them if you use a water cooled turbo.
If its cold starting good with the current glowplugs and runs well with the injectors probably not worth changing them. If anything you could pull your current injectors and have them flow tested and cleaned by a diesel injection shop.

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
Am I correct in thinking the 2-LTE is the water cooled Version ??
Also which turbo am I better off to fit the water cooled or would the oil cooled suffice

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
In the process of changing the welch plugs but I'm having issues getting the furl pump out. I have taken the timing cover and belt off but can't loosen the cog that is in the timing housing from the actual pump
Any help on getting this off would be great right now

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
It's not being lazy. I don't have the time, knowledge or space to take the engine out and put it on a bench and work on in so I am making do with what I have.
Ended up adding some heat to the nut and that free'd it up and have it almost back together now.

Re: 91 4runner loosing water
I have everything back together now but the 4by won't start on its own only with the aid of a jumper car and is blowing a lot of black smoke when it does start.
Can anyone help please. I did have take the timing belt off to replace the plug on the front passenger side of the head so I am thinking that timing could be the issue
