gday fellas, i know this has prob been done to death on here but after a few pointers, i have a 99 mod dual cab lux witha 3rz in it currently on dual fuel, and thinking about doing a v8 conversion with a t700 auto in it, just after any insight into whats involved in terms of adaptors and any problems issues people may have had doing this conversion?

Hey mate, the auto in a VT is a 4L60e which is an electric T700. They have a removable bell housing - unlike T700's - and a 6 bolt tail housing - 4 bolt for T700. Because if the 6 bolt rear end, you need two adaptors to mate it to the transfer. Marks sell both but I'm pretty sure you have to run the VSS off the transfer case speedo cable (someone will correct me if I'm wrong.) I got the Locktup adaptor (AA) and I'm about to order the 6 bolt to 4 bolt adaptor from Advanced Adaptors in the US. This adaptor come with provision for a VSS and actually includes a new GM one with the adaptor so you can have the VSS run to the PCM and keep the speedo cable for the speedo.
You have to disassemble the auto to change the output shaft. You can do the bare minimum and just get a couple of seals and gaskets but I reckon it's a good time for a rebuild. I just finished rebuilding mine. Get the ATSG manual if you want to do it yourself. Ordering parts from the US, the rebuild only cost about $750 in parts - including some trick bits.
I'm only putting a V6 in so can't help with engine mounts or sump clearance info. If you need the memcal modded to remove VATS, change thermo fan cut-in/out temps and the VSS input signal modded to suit gearing (needed for TC slip and lockup), I can recommend someone who charges $100.

I've just swapped in A T700R4 behind my Holden V8 (been in for a couple of months now) and it is an awesome gearbox but I rebuilt mine before putting it in.
I would advise on doing a rebuild if your going to do hard work/tracks in your 4by, a must is the Beast or Sonnex sun shell as it is 90% stronger than the factory unit, I put in a Transtec Power Pack Red Eagle kit, I rebuilt the pump using a 13 vane kit & Transgo unbreakable bush kit (for high revs) as well I put in a Transgo full manual kit through the valve body, billet servo's, .500 boost valve & .300 reverse boost valve and topped it off with a 2200rpm Stall converter with a modded lock up so I can lock 2, 3 & 4th gear.
I built my own adaptor & coupling (with a hand from some club members) to fit up to my chain driven transfer case and I think the adapters available are way too dear for what you get.
21 spline to 27 spline coupler sleeve has been nitrated.
All done and on the road, I made tube x-members (atuo & transfer case) and it is tucked up higher than standard

Shifts are lightning fast and the beauty of being full manual I can pick the gear I want when offroad and it will stay in it.
I wanted to keep the standard output shaft (for ease of quickly swapping in a new auto in the case of destroying this one).

thanks for the replies fellas, sounds like quite a bit of work has gone into both of those, i didnt realise there would be so much to think about? just thought bolt in motor and box, with adaptor to transfer case, and some oil and electrics and job done, but clearly ill need to do some more research.. thanks guys

Yeah a fair amount of work goes into the auto to make it work properly offroad, you need to be able to hold the gear you want when climbing or decending tracks.
You could just modify a stock auto's valve body so it will hold the gears but it will not last long if you give it a hard time.
Rebuild kits come in different build stages and are cheaper as they get towards standard settings.
Mine is purpose built as I'm running a Turbocharged 5ltr Holden V8.
