Timing belt light, 1hdt 80 series. Comes on at 2900rpm

Post by SIMMO84 »

I thought the light only came on at 100k km intervals. Why would it come on at 2900rpm? It does it every time it hits 2900 rpm and only seems like its under acceleration. ie, if your doing 3200rpm overtaking and back off the light goes out. Any help is appreciated.

I dont know then.
1st ive heard of it,
Ive got a 96 hdj80 with a ft motor & the air filter light come's up as youve discribed when its dirty.
Maybe you have short some where.
When the timing belt light come's on it normaly wont go of until you push the reset button in the dash panel.

check the alternator regulator operation. usually the dash lights come on when it starts to fail. t belt light is usually the first to light up as well

My first thought was air filter warning light, mine comes on around 3000rpm with a dirty filter.
Second would be check alternator plugs and connections, random warning lights flashing is an indicator of a problem with the alternator or a bad earth somewhere, if it happens consistently at the same rpm, I would suspect the alternator.

It's not the fuel filter warning light?

You could try pushing in the little reset button for the timing light and see if it makes any difference.
The timing belt light is triggered by th odometer gears, so it shouldn't be affected by rpm.

Yeah that was my thoughts. If I get a chance I'll have a look today. Alternator is a possibility as it barely charges at idle, but comes good at about 1000rpm. I'll check the air cleaner as that might solve a few other problems aswell. Haha mechanics cars.......

Looks like it was the air cleaner, must be some crossed wires in the dash somewhere.
