Will this turbo suit TB45

Post by JuzGU »

Hi guys,
I am about to rebuild my tb45 and will be adding a turbo to it.
The motor will be pretty much stock but with tb42 rods and bigger injectors, i have been offered a gt35 turbo by a friend for $400 ( it is almost new and has only done a few thousand kms)
The problem i have is that i am not sure if the A/R specs will suit what i need, the car is mostly used for towing during the week (up to 2 tonne) and then play on the weekends. So i mainly need towing power over top end. At this stage it will be running on petrol only
I have read the thread about raptorthumper's tb45 ( http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic.php?t=86831" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) and have seen that his turbo has the following A/R specs - 1.06 turbine housing and .05 compressor housing. I have very little knowledge on turbos and need help in finding out how the difference in the A/R will affect drivability. Will it chew through more fuel with my turbo specs and will the turbo only kick in at higher revs?
Here are the specs on the turbo i have been offered:
Intel 4"
Outlet 2.5"
Bearing Ball Bearing Compressor / Journal Bearing Turbine
Exhaust Outlet 4-bolt, 3" OD
Flange Standard T3 Flange
HP 300~500 WHP
Working Pressure 6-25 PSI
Compressor .70 A/R
Turbine .63 A/R
Compressor Wheel 61.3 /82 mm
Turbine Wheel 62 /67.8 mm
Cooling Oil and Water Cooled

The car is a 99 Gu wagon TB45 with 35" cooper stt's and a 4 inch lift

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Justin

Mate for that sort of money I would be throwing that turbo on for sure! Looks pretty well suited to a TB45 and is similar to an XR6 sized turbo (which is about right)

yeah i was thinking the same thing, i can put it on and if it is no good can always change either the compressor or turbine housing for a few hundred. Alot cheaper than a whole new turbo.

I'd say 0.63 would be too small, I'd be looking for something that's more 1.06 or there abouts, that's just me though.
Your adding a turbo...don't kid yourself, forget about fuel economy

Don't want to be negative or anything, but if your towing wouldn't turbo diesel be better? people are still getting some serious boogy out of the TD42's for your weekend play time, just a thought.

0.63 exhaust with 0.70 compressor will be fine, spool slightly sooner than a 1.06 exhaust 0.50 compressor. Nice and responsive. Might start running out of puff by 4000rpm, but I wouldn't take it much past there anyway!

We had a .63 on a TB42 - it went well nut was definitely out of puff around 4000rpm.

I'm pretty sure they make a .84 housing - just my opinion - but I'd be leaning this way.

Also - on fuel economy - if you get a good tuner you will be surprised.
On 35s cruising on the highway - the TB42 ran 15/100kms - which I thought was very reasonable for a car that made 383rwhp.

I was thinking the same thing, am putting it together in the next few weeks and will see how it goes, if it runs out of puff too early i will get the housing changed

I dont want to rev it much over 4000 to look after the engine but will have to see

Hey Justin, you need the 1.06 for the TB45, less than that your turbo will not give all it can through the whole rpm range. For my setup I wrote http://www.turbobygarret.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; a few times, they were preety helpful
