witch winch to buy?

Guys, need ur expert advice here.
Am ready to buy a winch and bar for my GQ. It has a 4 inch suspension lift (NO BODY LIFT).
What do u guys suggest.
Im looking for a 1200lb winch, not decided weather to go steel cable or the other rope setup.

I have heard some good reports about the tigerz ..? (spelling)
Seems to have a 5 year warranty (i know that really means jack but hey its a good offer).

Why r there some called high and low mount winches?

Do they serve a special purpose or it is just personal preference?

The GQ is getting ready for a 2 year trip around this great country and im getting all the goodies now so i can get time to play with them before leaving.

low mount----- motor mounted on the side of the drum. more heat. lesser duty cycle.


with winches, you get what you pay for. I have an ironman 12000lb low mount. Its slow but pull like a school boy.

just go for what you can afford.

Rope requires more maintainence (washing and keeping out of sunlight) and tends to want to dig into itself on the drum if its not wound on tight.

Steel holds more energy and obviosly weighs more but lasts forever if treated right.

The cheaper winches (ironman, tigerz etc. etc) just need to be pulled apart and re-greased with quality grease when you get them.

Just remember the duty cycles are low, as in, winch for 30 sec, rest it for 60 sec. stick roughly to that and rebuild/regease every year ( or earlier depending on usage) and a tigerz/cheapy will last forever.

Warn is good but overrated in my opinion.

I wouldnt go any less than 10000lbs on a patrol.

I've seen plenty of highmounts on fat heavy Patrols and Cruisers that work very well.
Highmounts are rated at 8000lbs IIRC

I love my highmount winch as its easy to repair, rebiuld. It's also able to have 50mtrs of rope/ cable compared to 30mtrs on most lowmounts standard. If desired faster gearing and extras can be done to make them stupid fast. There is a reason they the most popular on comp vechicles! Biggest issue is the initial coin compared to lowmount and bullbars need to have abit more room to house them.

Also i had to do a recovery of a GU in a flooded creek with water going in to the windows and above bonnent high. Due to urgency (whole family in car) we did a single line pull on the standard set up of the highmount. Dead pull off rocks and outer harm for the family. The winch/ battery was maxed but did it, so that gave me alot more confidence in it after that and have since done other recoveries before upgrading motor etc. not bad for over 10 year old winch! rebiuld average cost (ebay) $175 for rebiuld kit, 6HP motor $400 and 50M of rope arounf $300. now she'll run even longer with maintenance. hope this give you a bit of an idea etc for on going anyway

You said its best to re-grease the tigerz with good quality grease..... my question is... is the section to be greased easy to dismantle OR does the whole thing need to be stripped (including the cable off the spool? Also can it be done on the car once it has been fitted, i understand its best to do it new on the bench but after its fitted, can it be done in its mounting spot?

the cheapies will get you out of trouble, & if treaded right they will last a friggin long time &will be reliable. I agree with the above. I would suggest prior to instalation drill a drain hole in the bottom,tap a thread in it & run a drain line threw a 1 way valve (iused a small 1way directional fule filter) also tap a breather in the top & run the line up into your engine bay this will let the excess heat out & will reduce condensation build up. also remove & seal the motor & g-box with sickaflex or gasket goo then put it back to guarentee no leeky spots. There like Chinese motorbikes, the first ones were not reliable, but their quality has improved over the years.
winches like TJM, Warn & Premier by ARB are more expensive but their duty sycle (depending on the winch) usualy alot longer & line spead is quicker & they usually have additional seals to keep the water out. go what you can afford, anything is better than not having 1 when your stuck on your own. just for the record I sell TJM gear but if my budget was tight I probably go a tigrz or 1 of the new Tmax, just compare pricing 1st.

Thanks for the info. Think i wil go for the tigerz as it seems to be talked about most and i saw a video on some different quality ones and the tigerz was recomended to be fine.
As for your suggestions as to running breathers and such, well i understand what ur suggesting but i will need more info like drill sizes, where exaqctly to drill...etc.
One thing im not sure about though is this...
U guys have suggested servicing the winch yearly, can this be done without removing the winch or does this need to be a bench service. ( hell of a job to remove the bar and winch)

if you are lucky you might be able to remove the gearbox & motor while leaving the winch still installed.Just ckeck what might be in the way when you are doing the fit up, you might be able to cut some things out & re-brace them so you can pull the winch out with out removing the b-bar.

highmounts definitely have their place and can be made seriously wicked awesome but the OP was asking about cheaper winches, pretty much limiting him to lowmounts so i was more so referring to lowmounts when I suggested a 10000lb lower limit.

Tigerz 11 winches have a good name and in the Grande-Winches there is a 20000lbs winch for $665....... That is ridiculous!!!

And you can have your winch with or without plasma rope too!!

mate go one of these, i have a massive 4.8 gu wagon, been runnin this winch for years, it has everything you need, for half the price. i have lost count over the years how many trucks ive rescued including my own and has never yet let me down, there 17000lb , its not even working pulling another 4b out of servere bog. anyone that puts down these no name winches simply are the ones that have never tried them, i spent another $60 when i purchased it for heavy duty wire so i could relocate the solenoid box up under my bonnet out of the weather. the have a main on/off switch so when not in use the solenoids dont have continous power to them. this would be the 3rd year of having it and has never let me down.

ur a legend mate.
I checked out the site and they look good. Sydney based too which is a bonus for repairs or parts. Also noticed a 12V 1/2 inch impact gun which is dirt cheap. Comes with carry case / impact sockets and cables for 59 bucks. Excellent price that. Im gonna make sure that winch will bolt up to a ARB bar before I order one though. So cheap too.

Yes mate they do bolt up to a arb winch bar. Like i said been running it for years, have not had one drama yet. Unlike alot winches they have a main switch for the solenoids , which saves them in the long run,
