High mount v hydraulic winch

Hi guys
I have a hydraulic winch that go's good but seeing all the twin motor setups and 24 volt high mounts how good do they really go as in line pull and line speed at let's say 10 000 lbs pull . I know that my winch will pull 80 feet a min at 10 000 lbs is that what a good high mount will do or what is the best of them doing .

At 10,000lbs a good condition Himount with the 4.6hp motor will have stalled and doing nothing. So well and truly a win for the hydraulic.
And I dont think even upgrading to 6hp is going to make much difference to the pulling capicity.
It is possible to upgrade motor and pump on your hydraulic motor for much more performance. What pump and motor upgrade you need I am not sure. Also with higher pressures you need to look at having a bigger oil reserve and maybe an oil cooler.

Hi Steven, On those figures the hydraulic is a winner, & that surprises me not. Is yours driven off the power steer pump, a separate belt driven pump , or a PTO. ? All types are or have been available ! I would love a PTO job, but very hard to find the Patrol PTO . They used them with the Patrol Safari to drive a mechanical winch. I know I am off your question now, but do you ( or anyone else ) know how I could track down a Patrol PTO unit? No longer available new, and it has been suggested that I will probably step in a pile of rocking horse poo before I find one !

The hydraulic is great for hard slogs such as winching through a BIG mud pile or up a very long slope. However it will not winch as fast as a well set up twin motor high mount and nowhere near as fast as a well set up comp low mount. Some of them are winching in at up to 30km/h. They basically chuck the truck in 2nd drop the clutch and hit the winch. To watch them winch up an obstacle looks like they are just driving it. Its that fast. However each have their draw backs. Big electric winches draw a lot of power and will drain the batteries if a very long winch is needed. This has happened to me in competition before. But a hydraulic winch can not be used if the engine is not running. So if you are on your side or stuck in water/mud and the engine stops. You're stuffed. You can't restart the engine so you can't winch.

This is why on my comp truck that i am building now will have both types of winches on it. If you are going to upgrade your pump and motor for the winch you have then you will need to do a full rebuild on the winch and replace bushes with bearings etc where possible if you want it to last properly.
