Looking at replacing the old Locked and lifted Lux and getting into something more comfy and newer.
So tell me about the 105 Cruiser in GXL, diesel, manual form.
Do they come in factory turbo diesel form ?
What are the prefix numbers/ letters for the na diesel and/or turbo diesel ? [hzj105 ??]
Any problems with the manual box ?
Any problems with the engine ?
Do the handbrakes have a problem ?
Any other problems that I should know about ?
Look, realy, I'm after a solid front axle truck that can be modded with out blowing the engine, box, or diffs cause ya fitted a turbo, and has enough ponies to tow a small van without draging the bowser behind you. It must also look good and be comfy for the family, and not sit in the garrage most weekends getting spanners thrown at it.
My Lux is freakin awesome, goes anywhere , but the Mrs won't drive it cause the clutch is too stiff and the handbrake never works cause she aint got the muscle to pul the gay Lux handbrake leaver, and the dam thing rattles ya spine till the family has a winge, then i'ts in the shed getting the Box replaced again, or some other expensive componet, arghhhh.

105series are all solid/live axle front end.
105series diesel only come as N/A 1HZ. Model is HZJ105.
The manual box behind the 1HZ is a lightweight box and has some weaknesses.
Handbrake is a weakness, they require adjustment regularly if you get in the dirt and mud often.
Engine, no problems as long as you are happy plodding up hills, plenty of low rpm torque for off-road stuff, they can be turboed, but needs to be done properly and tuned carefully and monitored with EGT gauges, they tend to crack heads if not done correctly.
Standard front diff is a known weakness (2 pinion carrier is made of cheese) also, but this is fixed by fitting locker (rigid 4 pinion carrier) and solid pinion spacer.
If you are set on a turbo diesel, the model designation is HDJ100. The TD is only available with IFS, no solid axle. They have a heavier duty gearbox to cope with large gobs of torque on tap when you want it, you won't notice hills (whats a hill again?), but the handbrake will still suck balls.
I have a HZJ105, double locked on 35"s, it's comfy, very capable off-road, but really lacking grunt, and a functional handbrake

Lockers front and rear is a given, so that's one problem down. The engine will cop a turbo, and a good tune and egt guage , so that sorts out the donk. The handbrake will sux balls, so I will have to keep the mataince up, but at least the mrs gets a bit of leaverage unlike the sucky Lux. The box on the other hand, wtf can one do to overcome that.... So what can be done ?
Instead of spending the money on a turbo($3-4K ?), look for a 1HDFT with box attatched out of a wrecked 80 series($6-8K). It will be a much better engine than 1 HZ with turbo, should give better power and certainly better longevity!. try to sell your 1HZ to recover some costs($1.5-2K. )
or ideally look for a 1HDFTE out of a 100 with 5 speed auto!!! theres a couple guys on here that can sort the wiring. and then you've got the best engine ever

A box from a turbo diesel 100series or any 80series can be retro fitted, depending on which box you use, you may or may not need different clutch and flywheel components.
Or drive it until you kill it then upgrade to the tougher box.

I am certain I will blow a week box, and when I do, it's got to be a straight forward swap, changing theclutch and flywheel ate no probs.
Full engine and trans, or auto conversions I am capable of doing, but I'm over that much frigging around these days.

There are differences with shifter position, and It's best to get a transfer/gearbox combo, as the transfer case has a smaller input shaft to match the light gearbox.
There is plenty of info about the swap on the lcool forums
Actually, I'm collecting parts ready for a modification that will give me super low crawl ratio, not because I expect the box to POP anytime soon.

So what if the shifter is in a different position, no worries obout a transfer swap too. Just as long as i,m not fabricating x members, wires, cables, shaft lenghts ect. I am quite capable to do all this bs, but am way over super modding 4b,s these days and prefer pretty simple swaps.
