Bullet proof highsteer for Hilux/40 series?

Post by Baja Burley »

I've read that Hilux and 40s steering knuckles are interchangeable but if i buy and run 6 shooters on my Hilux axle now, will I be able to swap them over to a 40s housing later down the track?

Cheers
Luke

Hey mate, the knuckles are the same, therefore interchangeable. I'm pretty sure that you can't get six shooters for right hand drive vehicles though.

I have seen six shooters on the snakeracing website but there is a little bit in the ad that says "for hydraulic steering only" I suppose they are just selling the LH drive set for use with a hydro RAM...

What other options are there for a bullet proof highsteer setup?
I've read that people are snapping the studs when using the 4 stud highsteer arms from locktup, snake etc

Hey mate,

The ones on Snake are LH drive but doesn't matter with full hydro. If you're running a drag link, forget it.

Easiest option is to get the ARP knuckle studs - http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... studs.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Other options are larger studs - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=342774" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; OR Bobby Longs 5th stud mod - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre ... ost5752165" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I've got the ARP's and 5th stud but no one seems to brake the ARP's on their own if tensioned correctly and frequently. What size rubber you running?

I never snapped an ARP stud, it took a few outings before they stopped going loose though. In the end the studs ripped out of the swivel housing. If you keep the tyres down to a 37 and drive reasonably there is no reason why you cant get years of use out of a Locktup highsteer kit.

Just weld the high steer arm to the knuckle. Brace it down the front of the knuckle if ya want to. This is the way alot of the rock crawlers are doing it. Never have to worry about studs again, and you won't have to buy ARP ones.

Welding the arm to the knuckle would be a bastard to replace the swivel hub bearings and/or shim for the correct preload. Maybe ok for a crawler as you mentioned. Spose you could machine a groove in the knuckle and arm and make a woodruff key.

Changing the bearing is no different when welded. If ya know hilux's, you only need to pull off either the top or bottom to take off the knuckle not both. As for shimming, once you do it properly it should never have to be redone if changing new bearings. The problem with high steer is that it puts forces in the up direction and stretches the studs and ends up ripping the threads out. I've done plenty.

Is this what you ahve done on your rig? Can you actually pull the hub with the top bearing cap still on? If so, im ripping the welder out!!

Can I use a bundera Steering box on the Lux? It has a front facing pitman arm.. Will it clear the spring hanger alright?
Reason is I have a bundera wrecked in the yard with a reco box in it... Otherwise, what can an IFS box be picked up for?

Yep, Just pull off the bottom cap and then slide out the bottom bearing then you can pull off the whole hub. Then you can just pull off the top bearing and slide on a new one if needed. I've been told by a boilie that a type of stainless steel rod is the best for welding steel to cast steel but he just miged it for me.

After googling it, I'm sure it is 309 stainless steel rods...

Trail-gear now sell six shooters for RHD vehicles, they have had them for a couple of months now

And if you keep the studs tight they won't snap!
