Lt230 lower gearing for v8 4runner

Post by 94lux »

Hey guys looking for some info from people also running an lt230. I am currently running one stamped 1.21(I've gathered from a disco) in my 4runner with an LS1, 80 series diffs with 4.88 centres. The gearing doesn't suit my type of 4wding which is rockcrawling. Constantly on the clutch as it keeps stalling. Wanting something closer to when i had my lux on 37's, 4.88's and duals with stock gearing. I have searched and read everything i could find, it seems ashcroft in the UK is the way to go. Can anyone help me on what gearing i should lean towards and any other helpful info you may have on lt230's and people's opinions on ashcroft gears. Also looking to put some higher gearing in high range for better fuel economy for longer trips and to not be constantly changing gears so quickly when taking off......Cheers!

The LT230 you have stamped as 1.21 is referring to the high range ratio of the box.
The low range is 3.322:1

The options are either MaxiDrive reduction gears - 30% 4.3:1 or 49% 5:1, but these replace your low range gearing. So you will have a 1.21H and a 4.3L or 5L

The other option as you mention is the underdrive unit from Ashcroft. But keep in mind you need to make sure your current LT230 is a Suffix C or later box with the 26 tooth input gear.
Now the underdrive once bolted to the rear PTO output of the LT230 will give you a further 2.69:1 reduction to the H or L range you have selected
So as you have a 1.21 High your really only have three ratios still cause H+underdrive is almost identical to stock low. Your gearing options are;
1.21:1 High
3.26:1 High+Underdrive
3.32:1 Low
8.94:1 Low+Underdrive

Edit: sorry also noticed you claim the Lt is from a disco so it should be a later suffix and accept the under drive.

Cheers
