Best diesel engine option?

Post by pato castro »

Hello, i need an advice from the diesel experts around here, a friend has an '80 toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 with the 4.2, 6 cylinder gasoline engine and wants to install a potent turbo diesel, intercooled engine on it, if possible with tranny and T/Case too. What would be the better option using toyota engines?

12-HT 4.2l from the Late 60 series... 13-BT 3.5l from the 73 series MWB. I konw the 12-HT is direct injection turbo diesel.. not sure about the 13-BT tho. Both would love intercooling and 10 psi boost i sure
Cheers,
Dan.

12h-t is direct injection turbo... i got no idea if it's intercooled (but that's an easy thing to rectify)

does it have to be toyota, cause doesn't the 6.5lt turbo diesel chev go good in them with a shit load of torque at low revs.

13BT is direct injection. From what i understand 13BT is a better option than aftermarket turboing a 3B (unfortunately what i just did in my middy) as you can run a higher boost if you require due to direct injection. If your mate is wanting a yota motor with a turbo start with a 12HT or a 13BT as the direct injection and factory turbo will give a better starting performance and more potential than aftermarket on an indirect injection motor. Either would push the 40 along quite nicely, especially with an intercooler, exhaust and boost tweaked just a little

13BT was from the 74 series, 73 series ran the 3B

But i'm no expert

how much do you have to spend? a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT (from 80 series) will go into a 4x without too much drama. tons of power potential there.
