You should be able to, people use surf rear suspension in hilux chassis, chassis us basically the same I believe, and by using factory parts and factory configuration, you shouldn't have too much trouble, but speak to an engineer first.

Or use 80series top and bottom links for better length and better articulation, and still factory parts.

Yes you can, the rear of my lux is engineered for 4-link. Used the standard 80 series lower arms, top and bottom as stated above.
Have a chat to buddy from budscustoms he did mine, and has done alot now never had an issue with engineering.
sales@budscustoms.com.au or 0417708598 he will point you in the right direction

no you can't!!!
DOT will not pass it... an engineer might approve it, but on inspection it will be rejected and you will be taken off the road.

Better running a engineered 4-link than extended shackles. ;)

So it can be engineered using factory arms.
BUT the dot won't pass it is that correct?
So all in all I can still get defected for it?
its not a daily but driven from to the tracks and home pretty much every weekend

I can't think of a factory 4 link. Surfs ,cruisers,and patrols are 5 link

well as i said mine is engineered and my daily, never had an issue with the DOT or police. Yes i would imagine it turning into a sh!t fight if they wish to inspect.
best bet is to talk to an engineer.

You can get away with using the lower arms from the 5-links for upper and lower 4-link arms as they are still factory components

For the aerial being on the front of the car he was told it cant be infront of the a pillar unless there is no were to mount it on the back. So the guy was a compleat wanker and went over the entire truck, Todd said he looked pissed because he couldnt find more wrong.

So yes and engineered 4-link is perfectly legael if plated, DOT will not put it off the road.
As in my first post my truck and the one that passed DOT were done by Budscustoms.

Gee that makes me feel so at ease! :? ours has been plated since day one, we also have welding certs and NDT test certs on the links used as well as a shiny blue plate.

But you know that is means squat in QLD! There is no way in hell i would take it to pineapple street for an inspection, they will fail it on the spot and then chase the engineer. Been there - done that. Ask Dave Metcalf to confirm, he is fully approved for just about every mod available and there in no way in hell he would be stupid enough to go through with all the crap associated, he has tried all this stuff before. Its a no win situation in QLD.....

Qld DOT are idiots. They only have one rule - They are right! I have personally seen them trying to defect a car that wasn't even modified?? WTF. What wrecked it was the backyard boys doing dodgy mods, So even those of us who legitimately go to all the effort to do it properly get screwed. Those of us oldies can probably remember back to when they changed the ruling on SPOA, DOT decided blanket NO on all, even those who had been previously approved. IF caught you wouldn't be fined, but were told to change it back within 30days.... A$$HOLES.

Going by your info mate. In that case it simply isn't legal. It may be in nsw though.

Just because it's plated doesn't mean sqaut. I can get a engineer to mod plate my flipped arms. And some have already done this. Still doesn't mean it's accepted by transport in qld. Like Greg said. They will put it off the road and then chase the engineer.

Not saying this will be the case 100% of the time but would rather have it than not, and yes it does mean something its not just a pretty blue plate we stick on our trucks for sh!ts and giggles.
If your engineer will sign off on a flip arm than you my friend are the reason that mod plates don't mean a great deal now.
and as Greg also said

No your missing the point mate. The problem is the differences between states. It's fine for an engineer to sign off on flipped arms in 1 state. But it's illegal to drive on in another. This is the stupid part.

Don't try and blame me for your ignorance of hiding behind a blue plate and thinking your sweet. Yes, I agree with you. It's better to have 1 than to not. To me it means it's safe. Doesnt mean it's legal.

I think at the end of the day "mostly" it's about keeping your vehicle looking well maintained, driving sanely, and not failing the "d1ckhead test" when talking to officers of the law. Sure there'll always be the occasional DOT roadside inspection fest where they're having a blitz or just setting out to be carnts. but for the most part if you're not drivng around in a car that looks like it's going to fall over with a breath of wind, or it's got bits hanging off it then you're pretty right to bullshit your way past most cops that see you.

I've been done for speeding in the red truck, both in NSW and QLD, and breathos, and just random stops. Only one has ever asked about the mods and when pointed to the plate they said " no worries". The worst i've ever has said to me was "please un-bash your number plate so it's legible again" .

But then my 4 link and all my other mods were built by a professional, it's all neat and obviously well built. It's packaged nicely and doesn't have booger welds and half a ton of over-engineered plate steel everywhere that looks like it's compensating for a lack of proper engineering forethought.

I think this is a load of crap regarding DOT failing these suspension redesigns.

You cannot get a suspension modification approved (flipped radius arms) but you can get a suspension redesign approved. (leaf to coil is a redesign)

If you have complied with the process, had an engineer sign off on it, then no qld transport inspector can argue with it. It must be challenged by QLD Transports own engineers who would have no grounds to challenge it.

I have never personally been through this, but i think there is alot of BS going on. I would bet that those getting challenged on thier engineered suspensions have many other things on thier car thats wrong, and they are just adding the suspension to the list.
