I have a 2004 1kz-te hilux turbo diesel. Its got a fly by wire electronic throttle, after alot of trouble shooting i have come to the conclusion that the sluggish behaviour of the engine is because the butterfly is opening 45% of the way. I am not sure where to go from here.
Do the ECU's ever die or the throttle body motor for the butterfly? What other options do I have?
I have redone all the earths on the vehicle, pulled the ECU and inspected (seems fine), reset the ECU, cleaned all the throttle body and manifold out, inspected and adjusted everything i can on the TB aswell.

I'm gonna show complete ignorance here, but why does a diesel have a butterfly/throttle body? i thought engine rpm was governed by the fuel system?Feass wrote:Gday,

the main butterfly is operated by the throttle cable. the 2nd butterfly is controlled by ecu depending on egr requirement or engine shutoff.
rockcrawler31, the butterfly is for emissions purposes. ie restrict airflow and suck in more egr.

The 2002-2005 hilux 1kzt-e is fly by wire, im wondering if the ecu is faulty?

3.0L turbo diesel, 4" lift, bud's front housing, track assasin cv's, air lokker front + Rear, beadlock'd 37 stickies, high steer, 15.5" travel ranchos, high pinion diff and coils on the rear

Three reasons for butterfly on diesel:
* Shut down engine (such as 12HT)
* Reduce shut down shudder by reducing effective compression ratio (early 1HDFTE)
* Assist with egr by creating a vacuum in the intake manifold, drawing the exhaust gas in (such as late 1HD-FTE)
Bypass your EGR, remove the butterfly (leave shaft and all electric intact else it will likely throw a code
* Shut down engine (such as 12HT)
