1 HD FTE power upgrade

Post by ajkt »

Hi,
I've only just discovered this forum as I'm relatively new to L/C 4WDs. I now own a 79 series RV with an 1HD FTE. I tow a tandem horse float and whilst the ute does fine on the flat it struggles on the hills.
I've been exploring a CP chip install and a 3" exhaust upgrade but was pointed to this forum from another one I'm on. The comments made by Custom Turbos look impressive.
Does anyone have any views about the likely improvement I could get from each of a chip, exhaust, turbo mods, different turbo and intercooler. Like all of us, the bickie barrel isn't endless, so if I'd like to pick the best one or two options.
Cheers
AJ

I got a 79 series ute for the parts truck. It's got a 3" beaudesesrt exhaust system safari snorkel and a stienbaurer chip on it and it puts out 117kw on 35" tread. It hooks and really drivable. And got a beautiful zorst note. IMHO no other chip conpares to stienbaurer. And have played with a few. *THAT IS MY OPINION*

steinbaur chips are the way to go.
being part of a team who spent a fair amount of time playing with these motors to see what power we can get out them with out opening them up. We found the steinbaurs were the only chip who could delivers what we wanted and every time. A lot of chips we experimented with had issues and were not 100 percent reliable.

but a stock 1hdfte should tow a tandem with out an issue. I've personally seen them tow 3.5 tonne caravans up hills effortlessly on cruise control.
