suggest a good contact cleaner/solvent

Post by rockcrawler31 »

Hi all

I have a head light upgrade in the cruiser (relays and HD wiring) that keeps blowing bulbs. My number one suspect to me is that a connection somewhere is a bit dodgy and is inducing too much resistance into the system which over heats the bulb and blows it.

Can any one recommend a good spray on contact cleaner/corrosion solvent that i can use? I've seen a good result from Wurth contact OL but i can't bloody find anywhere to buy it from readily. Any other product suggestions? Basically i want something that i can spray on the connections that aggresively removes any corrosion or grime and gives a good conducting surface again, between that and just squeezing the crimp terminals a little tighter on the relay spades i'm hoping that will solve it

We use that here at work, but it kind of only cleans off chemicals and grease etc as it seems to be a pure hydrocarbon based spray. The i want something that aggresively takes off that patina of corrosion and leaves fresh brass/copper/tin whatever the base connector metal is. I'll see if i can pinch some from work though and give it a go. Bloody exxy at 50 bucks a can!!

What about old skool remedies :D

Brasso, worcestershire sauce, bi-carb soda, lemon juice, Coca-Cola or some phosphoric acid or CLR clear.

All mildly acidic or caustic, should clean up any patina, and you've probably got at least one of these laying about the house.

damn you and your good ideas! will the likes of CLR or phoshoric eat the plastics though? Mechanical scrubbing or polishing is out of the question, the contacts surface can't really be reached on a female spade terminal

It won't affect plastics, but residue needs to br thoroughly cleaned off, or it will cause corrosion. Try and keep the wires out of it, just clean terminals only if possible.

Your thinking is all wrong. A high resistance contact will not cause your bulb to blow. In fact the opposite is true. A high resistance contact will allow less current to flow. I suggest you look for other causes like poor quality bulbs or vibration ETC.
