Warn high mount oil
Hey guys I just bought myself a warn 8274 high mount, I did a bit of research and it seems to say 6oz of 30 weight oil, but have also read about guys putting in 10 oz which is a fair bit more..
Since I have some castrol epx 80w-90 sitting in the shed is that ok to use and how much oil do you use.
Cheers brad

Re: Warn high mount oil
Pretty sure mine has got EP90 oil engraved on the top housing. Cant remember how much though and the winch is not with me.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Re: Warn high mount oil
I'll have a look over it when I get home, but it was recod and repainted so maybe that's why I can't see it..
Lots of info from the states, but not all relevant..
Just wondering what the comp guys use and how often it gets changed.
Cheers

Re: Warn high mount oil
They're a pretty slow, sturdy unit. Fill it until oil is level with the bottom of the lower seal (drum seal). The heavier and sticker the oil the better it will transfer to the upper gear train and it will leak more slowly. Change the oil when it gets moisture in it.

Re: Warn high mount oil
Woud a 140 weight diff oil be ok?

Re: Warn high mount oil
I used about 500ml of 90 w gear oil in the highmount with no issues, and about 600m of the same weight in the gigglepin. Have checked it and changed it recently and all is good. 140w should be fine too, will stick to the gears and shouldn't cause any adverse problems I could think of.
The gears are tough and dont run particularly tight tolerances.

Re: Warn high mount oil
6 oz is only 180 ml but it can never hurt to have more

Re: Warn high mount oil
Can't hurt putting too much in, however if you have a deltatek air free spool, then you can put too much in. It turns out that if you put too much in that the drum won't disengage, the correct/maximum amount I found is cut the top off a XXXX gold can (may also work with other brands of beer, probably not VB though, I think the residual beer will burn holes in the housing) and fill that with 80w90 and put that in the winch.

Re: Warn high mount oil
Dont use 140.
Put some Moreys or similar oil stabiliser in it as well and it will climb over the gear teeth easier and leave them coated after use to help stop rust and give better lube.
