just wondering if anyone has got a 3ltr patrol with dp chip and weather they are worth the money. does it actually better fuel economy, power ect?? or lower EGT s?

DP = crap fuel eco after about 4 to 6 months. DP has good advertising but is not good product.
Get a Steinbauer. Less problems, more power, less fuel. The unit it self costs $1495 most good workshops will charge 1.5 to 2 hours to put it in. Or if your good with wires its fairly easy to put in. Only hard part is finding the wire from the back of the pedal with the 0-5ohm variance. The rest of it is plug and play.
A steinbauer and a beaudesert exhaust = a perfect match. Just make sure you have done the crank case mod and cleaned out the oil out of the intake before doing anything.

In the past 2 months we have taken out 2 DP chips and 1 STI chip and replaced them with Steinbauer. Customers couldnt be happier.

Nah that was my mistake, i figured all the chips would be the same price, was looking at the v8 cruiser one $2722!

Yahhh all good but honestly anything toyota or nissan I wouldnt use any other chip then Steinbauer. I have only been working at this shop for 6 months and I can already tell you what customers come back with problems and the ones that dont.

why clean out the oil in the intake ????? as soon as you go for a big drive it will be right back in the pipes !! and what is the crank case mode ?? cheers My mate got a ROO system on hes 2010 Y61 ute and it made a big differance. cheers

Sorry I meant the valve cover breather. (the hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake tube.) Remove it, plug the hole in the intake then get a longer hose long enough to hang down the side of the block and kind of dangle there. Some people go through the trouble of putting a filter/oil catch on the hose and it works but isn't needed. The 3.0 in the patrols are very well known for over fueling causing the pistons to melt blahh blahh blahh..... This is caused by the oily vapor being sucked into the intake through that hose and covering the air sensors in the intake with a coat of oil. This is what causes the over fueling. Without doing this mod or some form of it EVERY 3.0 Patrol is a ticking time bomb. The Navara dosnt have this problem because of where the relative sensors are located they are not affected by the oil.

So if you did a little research on your engine and did this simple mod then you will never have oil in your intake tube. :cool:

Ok Dave, Your theroy is correct but the application is not.
Running the crankcase breather down the side of the block is very bad. Other than the fact it is very illegal and easy for the DOT to spot. It is not only bad for the environment, the road where the oil gets spilt but you will end up with oil all over the bottom of the foorby.
The correct method is to use a oil vapor separator like a Provent or modify an normal catch can so that it catches the oil before the gas gets back into the intake manifold.
This is my setup on the GU and the amount of oil it catches every 10,000km. It is easy to do and legal. The inside of my intercooler and the pipes are clean with no oil inside. The catch can takes about 5min to empty out when I do the oil change every 10,000km.

Having said that. The MAF getting fouled with oil is only half the reason you fit the catch can. The other reason is to stop the formation of oily sludge buildup inside the intake manifold. This is normally done in conjuntion with blocking the EGR at the manifold as it is the soot from the EGR that mixes with the oil to make the sludge.

Even with the catch can in place, you still need to clean the MAF every once and a while because it still gets dirty. A can of MAF cleaner from Supercrap does the job easily with no risk to the MAF.

Hello mate the reason why the early 3lts blow up is not because the over fuel! it is because the over boost and the solenoid that controls the variable vane turbro is not strong enough to pull it back off boost when they over boost witch causes the pistons to melt, normaly number 4 this is my understanding. and whats wrong with a little oil in the intake anyway ?????? if it was such a problem why is it fitted like that from factory ?? cheers Rick.

Over fueling because of faulty MAFs is one of the main causes of the pistons failing due to excessive heat. It is easily fixed with the catch can and regular cleaning of the MAF sensor.
Yes overboost is also a cause of the engine failing although your theroy on why is totally wrong. The ZD30 in the Patrol uses vacuum to control the VNT accuator which contols how much boost is made and how fast the turbo spools up. The more vacuum that gets applied, the more boost is made. The ECU controls this by modulating the vaccum going to the VNT accuator. The trouble is that by the time the ECU tells the VNT solinoid to reduce the vaccuum it is too late and the engine is overboosting already. More boost = less heat so this is not a cause of pistons melting. The overboosting issue is easily fixed with a $35 Dawes valve.
As for the oil in the intake. The only reason the car companies feed crankcase gasses back into the engine is for emissions compliance. It is not good for the engine and causes issues with most cars.
The main reason it is bad is because the oil mixes with the soot from the EGR system and forms a sludge. This sludge tends to build up in the runners for #3 & 4 cylinders causing restriction. Because of the restriction in airflow, cylinders 3 & 4 run richer than 1 & 2 causing excessive temps in those 2 cylinders.
Here is a pic of a ZD30 that has done 122,000. You can see the back port is already quite blocked. Once you take off the throttle body it is much worse the further in you get. I have seen much worse than this. (Thanks to Speedy_1 for the pic)
