new tougher axle fj40
G'day guys I'm thinking of upgradeing my axles and doing a spring over conversion on my 40 series... can anyone sugest an upgraded axle or should i just simply change the diff ratio's? I'm just looking for a starting point as its the last thing i have to do.. For it has everything else done to it.

Just by reading your post I'd suggest you search and read lots then google and read lots more. There is a dickload of info out there on spring overs, longfields and diff gears, those last two will depend on what size tyre you intend on running.

I'm sticking with 33's that i currently run, and I've read heaps but am having trouble choosing ... because ... there is so much info it's hard to choose

hey just curious as to why you need to do a spring over if you only plan to run 33's it would be pointless if you want clearance as you can get 33's to clear with stock springs and all the extra uneeded height would just make it more unstable?
with the diffs if your going to be upgrading the axles i'd suggest you also drill out the standard rear axle studs and replace them with 10mm ones at the same time as you'll break the studs before you break a stock axle.

Waitesy is right, no need for a spring over at all with 33's and no real need at all for axle upgrades either. You may find yourself breaking the odd cv but that would be it. Do more reading.

i have arb 2inch springs on my hj47.
on the front when fully stretched she well and trully scrubs my TYRE!! running 33 bfg 12.5 muddies.
thats on some knarlee ruts though!!
extend bumpstops or 3' lift.
or make new guards up. prefer this, just time, and a shed with gear to do it with.
original guards are in excellent condition.
have no one to play with soo it can wait for a fix.
mine realy does grind up into the guards pretty severely, on the lip, but thats what you get with a well made suspension kit, and its the heavy rated stuff, and still flexes well!! good to watch, get pics taken. must chase them up.

What exactly do you want to do? If you want to run 33's then just bolt them on. You do not need to change diff ratios and you don't need to upgrade axles or diffs. 33's will fit on mildly lifted suspension. IE reset stock springs or 2" aftermarket suspension kit. You will most likely want to cut the rear guards and fit flares. Have a bit more of a search and read through the toyota section and the members section. Don't waste time and money on stuff you don't need to do.evanstaniland wrote:More research required! Try the search!

You could go a 60 axle for the width. ARB lockers for the stronger carrier. Decent gears setup with good bearing preloads. They say Nitro gears are good. Marlin pinion seals with shiny multi drilled flanges. Chromo axle shafts. ARP studs and extra dowels, or bigger studs. Disc brake conversion. Extended breather. Trussed? Should be a good Toyota axle with enough to withstand a 33 inch wheel..

The info helped make my mind up with what i'll do. So this is what I'm doing,
just gonna brace/ strengthen the axle housing with some gussets,
add a diff protection cover.
will leave the axle change for another time,
and add larger bump stops to stop the tyres from scraping the inner guard wall,
enlarge the wheel studs
cheers guys that'll save some money and gives me more to do..
