Stainless Steel Exhaust

Hi:
My 2000 NL Pajero still has the original exhaust on it (Shhh - it may hear me!). Som etime in the future, hopefully way off, it must rust out, and I would like to replace it with a stainless muffler and pipes. Quiet, not noisy. Anyone here know of where I can buy a stainless muffler and pipework to suit?

Why stainless?

You've already seen a steel one can last 12 years, and still be good, not good enough?
Plus the fact that if you do take it off road and it gets damaged, it costs more to repair.

Personally, I'd only put a stainless exhaust on a very tidy street car, and only because it looks better polished up.

Why Stainless? Because whatever I put on to replace the original system will not last as long as the original, and I intend keeping the Pajero for a long time yet. One of the reasons the system has lasted so long has been that the car only gets used about once per 2 weeks, but it gets long runs which warm the system and dry it out. My wife's Magna gets quite a few short runs and in winter, the system never dries out. Typically, it has been the pipework which has rusted out in that car, but the replacement muffler (only about 3 yrs old) is starting to make farty sounds already, so I assume it will have to be replaced soon. I would like a stainless system for that car too.

I somehow have this idea that stainless is pretty much always noisier all else being equal. Is this right or have I been misinformed?

unless your new exhaust gets the same coatings inside and out that factory exhaust systems do, it will never ever last as long as a factory exhaust.

stainless should outlast a factory exhaust

Mine highlights the V8 noise a little more than other duramax's getting around with mild exhausts. No idea whether its louder though.

i find on my clubsport that the stainless makes it a higher note than mild steel exhausts, thats why so many LS motors sound shit in my opinion.... i recon the grade of stainless changes the noise too.
(note to anyone with an LS motors commodore, stay away from xforce and choose a diffilipo or similar, xforce=shit and my diffilipo=awsome)

A stainless muffler tends to last a bit longer and resonate more. Stainless is more brittle, so cracking in the pipework may be an issue. I've only had stainless mufflers in the past, the exhaust makers recomended agianst useing stainless for pipework.

Thanks for your replies. By the lack of responses telling me where to go (everyone does that!), I assume that there are no places which supply SS exhaust systems and they would be a custom (= expensive) job. In 1085, we bought a Magna (new) and just out of warranty, the rear muffler died - short tuns, cold climate, - it didn't warm up much to dry it out. Replaced the muffler and less than 1 year later, it was gone too. Put a SS muffler on and it was still there when we sold the car in 2000. I am really surprised at the life of the 2000 Pajero muffler, but it is going to die soon. The Magna (1998) has already died and the replacement (2 yrs old) is starting to make farty noises now, so I assume it is on the way out too.

various metals resonate at different frequencies ... a mate of mine had a cortina that he put a 60ish cm length of 50mm copper into the mid section of the exhaust .. made it sound much better than the rock in a milo can noise it made with normal mild steel.

So any exhaust for a paj seems to be bloody expensive ( I have been looking mine has been biffed and bashed a bit) .. no idea why, A stainless one may cost more than the car itself
