Cv joints

hey guys,

ima noob when it comes to parts and the more mechanical side of 4x4s. can anyone give me a brief description about cv joints? and weather my 1990 duel cab hilux has them in front and back or do they they only come in the front? cheers guys

Only come in the front, CV joints or technical term Constant Velocity joints are used in driveline systems which need to allow for suspension and steering movement. Therefore no rear axle will have CV joints unless of course you have 4 wheel steer. Your hilux would be a solid axle front, the cvs and axles are generally quite weak and the first thing to break offroad when fitted with lockers or larger tyres. If you don't fancy them breaking you can upgrade them to either 27 spline chromo cvs or just upgrade the axles and cvs to 30 spline chromo axles and cvs (Longfield or Dirty 30's)

Also, Evan was saying you should go and buy yourself a "workshop manual"
I pretty much learnt how to fix my first AE82 corolla like this, had NO IDEA about mechanics prior to owning that book.

Its basically a full mechanical breakdown of an entire vehicle from front indicator wiring to diff rebuild.
Often with step by step instructions.

Make sure you get a "Gregories" Manual though as I find them 100000 times easier to work with than the "Haynes" popular brand.

So go to supercheap, and look for the books on each model of car. They will have commodore, falcon, landcruiser and if ya lucky hilux.
If they don't have it, order it, keep it under the seat... saved me more than a handful of times!

also another dumb questions, what is isf suspension? i always thought it was independent but everyone seems to be talking about leaf springs when they say IFS?

IndependantFrontSuspension Hiluxs run longer leafs in the back. So its a good swap with extended shackle mix. Longer leafs = More flex avaliable!
