Hi guys I've got a 4.6l in my winch truck and just lately I've noticed when started from cold it blows a good amount of water from the exhauste on to the ground and it also does it some times when hot if you let it sit for a while then start it. My first thought was head gasket but it has no oil in the water and no water in the oil. It does drop a little bit of water from the overflow bottle every now and then but it dosent over heat and still runs fine. Ive herd different stories about slipped liners and cracked blocks. So my next step was to pull the heads of but just wanted some opinions on what it might be and what to look for befor I started. Any help would be great.

I have had a number of rovers that have a fair amount of condensation build up both after shutdown & ejected on initial starting/warm up. I currently also have a 4.6 with the exact same diagnosis as you have put forth above.
I assume like myself there is absolutely no moisture after the engine and exhaust is at full operating temp?
I also assume that the only colouration in the water is the black soot pulled from the internal surface of the exhaust, and their is no colouration of coolant visible?
If so I would not let it bother you at all. So long as your engine temps are kept in check, & the water is just sooty condensation being spat out the exhaust, the donk should be fine.

hi mate. yeah the water goes away as soon as the engine has started and warms the exhauste and yes its only black coloured,no green coolant. the motor starts up fine and does not miss or run ruff. if you let it sit for 20min and start it you will sometimes get a little bit come out again but not as much as the first start up. thats why i was thinking it might be leaking into a cylinder but it does not make any difference to how it runs. i think ill just leave it and see if it develops into something more then go from there...

How often do you have to top up your radiator?

Not very often although I haven't really had a chance to give it a good run due to finishing of the build up. Just have to wait and see what it does I spose then pull the heads and see what I'm dealing with.
