Warn high mount rope install

Post by brad 93hilux »

I reciently bought a highmount and made a bar for it on my lux, now I have bought some dyneema rope (50m x9mm) but the rope has a lug on the end where as the winch has a notch out..

Can I just drill into the bottom of the drum and tap it out without pulling winch apart?

Cheers brad

you cant attatch the rope the same way the cable was?

i would modify the end of your rope before you mess with the drum.

I don't know how the cable was as I bought a reco bare winch, there is a cutout in the corner of the drum but not sure how warn attached cable unless it went into the cutout and inside drum.

I drilled and tapped my drum, although I did it while I had the winch in pieces reconditioning it. If access is okay I can see no reason you couldn't drill and tap with it in situ.

just push the rope inside the drum and tie a knot in it. the end plate comes off with 2 8mm's for access

i tied the knot around bolt so when i want to take the rope off, undo the bolt and the knot is easily undone then instead of fighting with it or cutting it off

Just tape it to the drum. Couple of wraps of elec tape would do.

Tie a knot on the end then Double hitch it onto the drum then wrap it with tape. Thats how I have seen a few of the winch boys do it. That way if you need ot replace it. Its a easy swop over as well.

I commend those boys for having the kahunas to rely on that set up for holding 2+ tonne worth of fourby in a potential rollover situation. If it were me, I'd bolt the cable to the drum.

Brad, your hilux is damn sexy and makes me go all sorts of silly between the legs when I see an update. It would seem like a shame to go to all the effort that you have on your car to find out that your winch rope is taped onto the drum. Sounds ghetto fab

Lol, the bar has to come off within next week or so to finish welding and paint so ill pull off the end plate then and have a look. I would have thought a lug would pull off end of a rope before a 12.9 grade bolt would snap/ tear thread out of drum.

But thanks for the reply's

Thier setup is alot stronger than bolting the rope to the drum. A correctly done double hitch or even half hitch retains 60+% of the ropes strength. even a crappy double granny not is stronger than an electrical terminal crushed onto rope and bolted to the drum!!!!!!

its the last 6 wraps on the drum that take all the load. if you accidentally unspool this last 6 wraps then the not tied around the drum is about a thousand times stronger and safer.

I have had rope on my highmount for about 4 years and the only thing holding it on is a loose knot inside the drum!!
As said its the rope on the drum that holds it on!!
I have done 4 Toperi's with that setup and used it every time without any issues!! Plus alot of club trips
As for the bolt Warn use it on lowmounts just as a starting point for the wire to spool on!! If ANYONE thinks that a 5/16 bolt will hold the wire on to the winch is kinding themselves!! Anything you ever read about winching always says to keep atleast 6 turns of cable on there!!

Yeh I have learnt the 6 wraps on drum the hard way before (ended up chasing truck down a hill and got handbrake before it went too far into a big deep dam ) but that was when I first got into 4wd'n and I didn't know lug pulled off cable and stupid me had handbrake off.. Any way lesson learned..

I was thinking bolt not to winch against but to help it bight into drum, rope looks like really slippery stuff..

I'd just stick with the standard configuration (knot inside the drum) unless you're doing winch comps and need quick changing ability or your winch is modified in a way that prevents this method.

In fact i don't even use a knot, i just double it over and wrap the end in tape - easier do undo than an overtightened knot. Possibly not as strong but then it never should be relied on regardless of method.

9mm rope is pretty small so just splice it around a chain link and bolt the link to the drum.

Knots when under tension create their own heat and melt themselves (break).

But then if you have 50meters of rope out ,Sh:ts happened so as long as you account for it its all good.

Chook,
Have you actually pulled off all the rope or steel cable off a drum. If you think that pissy little screw actually does anything than to actually hold the rope in place till it gets a couple turns on the drum. I would be disappointed.
As soon as I find my solinoid. I will hang a disco off the cable till it skids all 4 wheels. I will even do if it with Masking tape.

Warn use a shitty little screw that has aprox 3mm of thread into the side of the drum.

Thanks for the reply's..

I put my rope on today, I didn't want to cut the lug off the end to tie a knot so I decided to tie a clove hitch around drum and use the lug with a 10mm 8.8 grade bolt through the hole in the drum with a few washers on inside and a nylock nut..
The clove hitch was holding pretty tight so I'm confident the 10mm bolt won't fail.

Thanks
Brad

With a clove hitch around the drum, I would expect the rope to break before your bolt ever saw any tension.

If you use any sort of metal screw etc be aware that the rope can be under tension and rub against it causing damage. Ensure you use a pan. button, stove or flange head.

Really? With 50m of rope on there the size of a 10mm bolt head is very small and would not be pulling that much rope on/ off enough times to think it should cause a problem.

It's not like the rope slides side ways on the drum with a clove hitch tied next to the bolt.

Have you had rope break like this before?

I could change to a button head bolt but I didn't think that would happen.
