engine choice/direction

Post by joel »

so i need a heart transplant in the f dump.

i have a ridiculous amount of options,
the outcome i am after is a long distance tourer/bush hunting/crawler. so fuel economy is high on the list.

do i go diesel? auto? manual or petrol?
i will be travelling in some pretty remote areas.

my top options thus far are, in no particular order.
4bt cummins
6bt cummins
we crd 3 litre from a ranger
td4.2 mav/gq
fpv xr6 turbo
351 efi
351 mech injection
351 carb (i hate carbs)
4.6 super charged mustang engine (cheapish from states)

help point me in a direction, as im half way there to being able to purchase one.
nealry all those engines will require a bit of fabrication to mount, but i have oodles of room, and i will need to fab up up mounts for whatever gearbox i choose to run and transfer.

any pointers most welcome!

if you want a long distance tourer do a search on google for the diesel cummins engines, there is plenty of info out there, plenty of those conversions have been done before. there have been a number of versions of the cummins 4bt and 6bt engines released over the years 12 or 24 volt, and mechanically to electronically injected engines each having there good and bad points

i dont know why, but i just hate the thought of putting a gm engine in a ford, its stupid i know, but i have looked at the power strokes engines as well, out of late model f trucks, im liking all the options, the price tag of 4bts in australia are quite expensive, sadly, well over priced, the WE 3 litre crd from the ranger is not a bad price and has quite good torque. i will continue to seek opinions and research before i plunge into a engine, also as the ranger engine is 1.4 litres smaller, newer and conforms to new eco standards, i am able to side step numerous engineering crap up here in the territory.
