The New National Code for vehicle mods.

Yes it is finally here in Queensland as of the 1st November.

Details as yet have not been released, but there are changes, most I hope for the better.

Engine Replacements:- was LA1 before, now LA1, LA2, LA3 & LA4 this will cover multi types of engine swaps, but I have been told that anything over a 5.8lt into a full size 4WD will still need written approval from Transport before it can legally be signed off.

Roll Cages:- was LH8 but now there are several Codes to comply with on this one.

I will not know what the changes are until the 1st as nothing has been released.

My Approval Codes have been changed and I can use the new Codes after the 1st November. But still waiting on all the new changes to be released.

If work has been commenced under the old codes/rules can still be used upto the 30th April 2013.

what about suspension links, Ie not changing the type of set up (radius arm or 4 link etc) but lengthening a link. Meaning a new link and new chassis mount.

What I have seen, still no.

The only way to get this approved is by submitting Form 1854 to Transport for their approval. If approved they will then issue you an approval letter stating what Codes (if any) you will need to get.

Please don't listen to anyone that says "I know someone who can Approve that". Because it will be a waste of good money.

As stated before those sort of mods need prior approval by Transport before they can be plated.

thanks David, is there a particular branch or person to deal with in DOT? I went to my local branch and asked for a list of approved ENGINEERS and the details they gave me were for mechanics etc that do blue plate for seat belts/seats etc.....

it is very frustrating trying to do the right thing...........

Fingers crossed they don't go backwards on the already tight limits on suspension/tyres.

Hi, if what I have seen suspension will stay the same, but made clearer.

Tyres will increase to 50mm instead of what we have now of 15mm.

But will let you know as soon as I find out.

It will not go to shit, just clearer (but no one seems to listen anyway, but then complains when Transport take them off the road)

Just remember that if it has anything to do with moving or building new suspension mounts or components you must have Transports Approval first, as there is no Code that can be used for mods like this.

With the tire size increase if your 31" tires standard we still can't have 33" tires as that's 50.8 right ?

If there is a 50mm increase allowed, then 50.8mm is too big.

That has always been allowed (44.45 tube) I think in the days long ago it was eaiser to say 45 then 44.45 which in old day terms was 13/4"

Until I see what is allowed I cannot be sure. But I am quite sure that you will not be able to have an "A" pillar hoop under the normal roll cage rules, which is now LK8 from the 1/11/2012. There are now several Codes for the Roll Cage/Bar. As soon as I know I will let you know.

So being able to say 44.45 is 45 is okay but we can't say 50 is 2 inch love the way they can have two things the same but different. When I went to school 44.45 would be rounded down to 44 not up to 45. Wow I wish I worked in government lol

No not at the moment.

So you will still have to seek approval.

But if you are talking about IFS to solid you will still have to seek approval first before it can be done.

Yes that is correct.

Track is measured center to center, so rims can be made to suit the legal increase.

ok so does that mean dave it isn't measured from outside of tyre to outside of tyre? i dont know anything but thought this was the case? as in center of tyre to center of tyre would give a massive variance...

track is measured from centre of tyre on one side of car, to centre of tyre on the other side

With Tyres 31's are not 31 inch they are usually slightly over, 33's are not 33 inch they are usually just under (some brands a lot under), so 33's will pass without a problem if you check the brand and manufacturers specs and choose accordingly
