HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
Hi Guys,
I've posted on multiple forums and got no reply's really hoping someone here is willing enough to give me some advice! I'm a fabricator not a mechanic so I cant make the decision without some input from others!
Rebuilt 308 without gearbox (would need to use my H42 4speed box and xfer case with adapter plate but need to keep costs down)
Rebuild Ford 302 with box and transfer case from an F100. (will fit pretty easily I'd assume)
1UZFE-VVTI with 97k on the clock (would use this with an auto soarer gearbox or possible even get an adapter to run my 4speed trans and xfer case)
Almighty 2H Diesel with 5 speed cruiser box and transfer case. All rebuilt and with 6 month warranty from a reputable company down here in Tassie. I'm really leaning towards the 2H for reliability and decent power. The last 2H I had died at 970,000k and never once had a rebuilt or any major issues. I know they aren't by any means a power house but the sound of the v8's being in the FJ40 also would be great!
I'm going to be going by my self most of the time in the middle of no where. Water crossings, big bog holes, and lots of trees. It's tassie after all. So what would you suggest? Someone please help me here!
Thanks!

Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
Mate if you plan on taking it swimming with you Id be looking at the good old 2h diesel. Ive owned one for years, and the only thing it does not have is a mermaids tail but it loves water.

Reliability diesel.
I Have a 1uz in my comp car and reliability wise I cannot complain.
But there is s fair bit of electrics.
What about Nissan diesel? 4.2TD manual and transfer?

Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
Cos not everything Toyota is good.
I'd be going a 4.2TD over a 308 or a 302.
They take decent boost numbers and are reliable. Gear box is strong also

Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
unless your going to use it for drag racing,go the 2h diesel,in my opinnion putting a v8 petrol in it ,is a wast of time
Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
What about a holden V6? would this be a good option? Ther cheap as chips and make good power, Parts are everyware and cheap also.
Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
stick to a 2h, slap a turbo on if you want a bit more power.
you can't beat the reliability or simplicity of the diesel.

Re: HELP! - ENGINE CHOICE
Right I have been where you were for years...
The 2H into the 40 is a good thing. I would rather see money go into it, than the v8. I ran one for years with 4.88s and 36 simex and it was a walk in the park. I know it lacks in super top end power, but in 80% of situations it didn't need it.
All the v8 is going to do is cost you money in both fuel and rebuild parts. For tassie, and i have been on all the tracks, i would rebuild the 2H, get some diff gears and a new radiator and enjoy a top bus that can go anywhere on a weekend. You dont need the turbo, as it only costs more.
i had a mate follow me with a 350 40 into some real water tracks, and i dragged his ares out.
