Paint Colour for dual cab hilux

I am building up a ln106 1990 hilux dual cab and trying to decide on paint colours. Initially I was dead keen on the new toyota colour called graphite (charcoal metalic) but if I went that colour it works out to be around 2grand in paint by the time I get primers and clears etc vs a solid colour which will only set me back about 5-600. Thinking the price differance could be spent better elswhere like lockers or nice set of alloys.
I am just trying to work out what colour to do though, I think blue would look good - I will have all satin black barwork and wheels.
2 colours I liked are the vk comodore hdt 'blue meanie' colour called formula blue and ford bionic blue which i think was on 05-06 xr8. I had a sample pot mixed up of the holden colour but looks a bit too teal - will see how it looks on a guard though.
Any other suggestions? doesn't have to be blue but I am thinking a solid colour is the way to go for a 4x4

if your taking it offroad, no better colour than white.

just dont do the black rims like every dog, cat, possum and snake are doing.

Nothing really, I was just wasn't expecting it to have any green tint to it - still going to spray a panel with it to see how it looks. I spent many hours drooling over the VK SS when I was just getting into cars as a teenager so it would be cool to have it that colour.

My current single cab is white, hides dents well but its not real exciting is it, it would look like every other hilux driving round. This ute is my first ever real 'custom' car other than just putting springs (lifted or lowered) and wheels/tires on a car so want to go something a bit different on the paint but the more I think about it the metallics are going to be a PITA to touch up later where as a solid colour I could just scuff the whole panel, give it a coat and it is good to go again rather than having the extra hassle of clear as well.
On the wheels I really like something like the Mickey T sidebiters in black and that may be where the money saved on paint goes - or procomp do a steely with round cutouts sort of like the mickey t classic. Perhaps I could go charcoal on the barwork and rims instead?

Silver, hides scratches dents & looks cleaner for longer than any other colour.

In my opinion a direct gloss non-metallic colour would be best suited to keep costs down
Keeping in mind if it gets knocked around abit your more than likely going to be painting panels here and the and doin touch ups so that would also make colour matching easier, silver is a real bitch to colour match aswell.

$2k sounds way steep.
Painted my last truck in spies hecker blueprint for around $600 all up.
Had 2l of clear left over, and still have 1 litre of blue.
Metallic base is $125 a litre and 2L should smoke it.
Hardly need primer if you are careful, and clear is the cheapest paint!

You could respray your hilux for about $800 in a clear over base if you wanted to. You would be looking at about 3 litres of basecoat give or take a little depending on the colour and if you respraying it inside and out or not. Unless your painting it white you really need a clear though because of our high UV rays here. That's why no paint company warrants a colour unless it's cleared anymore. I'd be recommending you paint it in Val spar industrial and use there LIC 40 binder as a clear. The clear is actually harder and more durable then the highest quality powder coats on the market.

The Bionic blue your referring to is actually a pearl from memory but you need to look very closely to actually see the pearl. I recently resprayed a mates Patrol in Val spar. It was a 3 layer pearl and it came up well. The LIC 40 binder (clear) can go straight over bare metal to if you want something very unique





It can be bought though any Autolac paint store or though them online.

after a bit of googling I found this hilux which I like - bionic blue, although mine won't have the submarine feature fitted

If I am going to have to clear it anyway then I may still look at metallic. The problem I found was that cause I wanted a metallic charcoal colour most seem to have a blue or a brown tint/hue to them which is why I really like the new Toyota graphite as it looked black tint

The charcoal silver grey they used on the later model 100 series looks great and the colour i'd love to paint my 80 series. Looked smick after a good polish on my uncles 100 any way.

I sprayed a damaged guard this morning half half with the bionic blue and formula blue. I like both colours but the ford blue really 'pops'. BTW the vk blue sprayed on nice and didn't come out as teal as I thought



Mick, does spraying a clear over the top of a solid colour change the look at all or will it look basically the same as no clear?

There's a good chance your right mate. There is that many colour options out there now you loose track once you have been out of the trade for a cople of years. lol

When you clear any colour it does darken it a touch but unless you put 2 panels side by side and knew what you where looking for you probably wouldn't notice. I'd personly do it in a clear or solid base as this will give you better protection and get better depth and gloss.
