Rego before or after on chassis swap??

Post by Elmo »

Quick question, yes i've searched so its pretty pointless me asking cause I pretty sure I know the answer but thought id ask opinions for the hell of it anyway.

Found a pretty mint SR5 jap import 84 4runner with all the fruit but its IFS.

I have available a solid axle 4runner chassis to do a swap with but in an ideal world id like to build it up (hi steer, shock hoops etc) while its a bare chassis so theres more room to work then do the swap after chassis is built and rolling.

Question: is this in any way possible to do without losing the current rego thats currently running on the IFS 4runner? Or is gunna be a new rego and effectively a whole new car with a body and motor swap onto the solid axle chassis, if you catch my drift??

In QLD it will be registered as the chassis number, ie, whatever the chassis is, thats the history and rego that will be carried through to the new vehicle.

not 100% if its the same where you are (nsw?)

I doubt any engineer is going to overlook your steering and suspension mods in approving the body swap.

NSW is the same - with a body swap it is registered as whatever the chassis is and in nsw depending on what year the chassis is from you may have to modify the body to bring it up to the same adr that the chassis had to comply with.
Why do you want to keep the rego - it will have to be certified/engineered anyway and isn't the sort of think you will be able to knock out over a weekend.

You do not need an engineers for a straight body swap if it bolts on. You need to get a change of details form from rta or blue slip guy. It will need to be inspected by a blue slip guy to see that it has everything that its supposed to, mudflaps etc.
I needed a weighbridge ticket as I went from a wagon to ute. Dont know a bout the same style body.
The tag numbers on the body will also be irrelevant on the new rego forms,

So Blackmav,
You had no dramas changing to a ute? Was anything said about the steel tray mounts, you would have had to weld on for the tray? I've got to change bodys on mine and thought ute mite be the way to go!!

I didnt modify the chassie mounts, I used the rear body mounts either side of the fuel tank and made some extentions for ontop of the mounts that would have been under the rear seats. On a ute chassie there are 2 mounts here but only one under a wagon.
