Reccomend a replacement main battery

Post by shiremark »

Hi all.

Looking for a new main battery that is going to stand up to everything that gets thrown at it.

After looking through old pages I'm guessing around 800-900 cca would be sufficient but unsure where to look to get one for a good price or brands that I should look at/steer clear of.

It's for a 2.8lD 4runner

I had optima blue tops, bought 2 at the same time. Both lasted less than 12 months, I lost my receipt so couldn't get warranty. Bought a 3rd, that lasted bout 13months. I still have one as a start battery and is still ok.

I have had a very good run with Optima's overall. Better than Exides which seemed to die a sudden death quite early on.

Optima's are stamped/marked on top for date of purchase..... I would have contacted the Aust agents if the retailer said no.

I have heard good things about the excide extreme batteries particularly if you can pick them up on special from kmart. I have always had a good run with century batteries in both commodores and my hilux's

Excuse my lack of knowledge oh knowledgeable one. And explain why I should listen to your opinion over anyone else's.

did look up cat batteries but had no idea which battery was the correct one that was 1000cca nor where to buy it from. Or if it would even fit in the space available in my engine bay. What model cat battery are you referring to

I have used the search function to see what others have recommended in the past but like everything things change and new products become available. If you actually read my original post you may know this. So maybe you should pull your head in and allow people to give their option aswell.

With the optima batteries what model would be best? there are a few that I have seen

Get onto hastings or westrac depends on where you are located. Any CAT dealer should be able to size your battery and supply you one with the right dimensions and output.

They are cheap, sturdy and very reliable batteries and as its been said have a great warranty.

If you give us a location we can point you in the right direction. I also have available to me a CAT battery catalogue so if you throw the dimensions up of your current battery I can post the appropriate part no.

Cheers

I'm in southern Sydney. I'm pretty sure there is a dealer down near Wollongong but not 100%. Will measure what size my battery is tomorrow

Thanks for the info

Second result on a google search ... you need to learn the internets ..

http://australia.cat.com/parts-service/parts/batteries" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://australia.cat.com/cda/files/3188 ... 0Guide.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; its a 3.4Mb pdf.

Everything you could ever want to know .. are you sure you should be doing this yourself nobody has given a step by step on how to replace a battery or what the + and - mean ..

perhaps you need to pull your head in a bit to .. you asked for help and you got given it .. only to basically say

Feel free to go through the cat reference guide like i already have and tell me which battery is 1000cca and would suit a 4runner.

Maybe I was a bit harsh to start with but it gets old reading a post where Someone says what is best, when everyone has different requirements. Everyone had there own opinion and should be able to state it without having to listen to someone else's bullshit telling them that they are wrong.

I don't care what brand of battery I buy as long as it is going to do what I want for a reasonable price

fark me, just went into detail and my internet dropped out.

S T A R T A G A I N :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

:bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:
175-4390
i have this battery.
it has threaded studs as posts.
its a true truck battery but not much bigger than a proper 4wd battery we run in our 4by's.
plenty of grunt for the winch, start my 2h slugger on any freezing winter morning EASY AS
first time i kicked the starter i couldnt believe how good it kicked over, soo i started it like 5 times, and couldnt get the smile off my face..
HAPPY CAMPER... :D

115-2422
is the other 1000CCA battery in the 12vlt.
its the same size, dimensions but slightly less in amp hours.
it might have the normal battery posts you require..

it doesnt matter what vehicle you have, its what space you have available for the battery you realy want to run.
and this is ideal.
plenty of grunt to spare, even to run your fully zic sub wooofer man, doof doof stereo that will upset your neighbours.
OR fridge, winch, or other stuff........

these batteries are ideal, have ample grunt for the winch, and any 12vlt appliance you would run on the hilux..
most stuff is power hungry too, soo plenty spare, and camp for 3 days without need to start the damn car.

pm me your addy and ill even email the chart to you..

i bought the top one because i farked up..  psst and it was a little cheaper.. like 35?
but made it work with some ally plate and now its perfect, winch, dual battery and bypass terminals as well as other stuff im running, headlight upgrade......
tapped some threads, and used stainless bolts.
i have noticed with this setup the terminals are HEAPS CLEANER than the normal battery clamps.. gotta love that..

why CAT.
CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAP
WARRANTY is superior to anything on the market. by a country mile and then another 500
RANGE, and lots of it. 12, 6 AND 24 VOLT... deep cycle, or normal,.... or lots of range again, gel, blah blah blah........
CAPACITY. nothing on the market comes close, CAT by far have a brand reputation in earthmoving that is world renound.. and theyre warranty with the battery says enough.
and price, by far the cheapest battery on earth, for another century to come!!

they have dealers australia wide, fast efficient couriers that freights it cheap via tnt, toll or others.
its a CAT
WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT..

ILL even assist you in choosing battery.
pm me your email addy and il send the battery chart......
not kidding..

i never buy shit, always quality and mostly good gear.
i honestly dont know how CAT does it for the price, but this is one HAPPY CUSTOMER, AND WILL REMAIN ONE FOR LIFE.

i cant realy do more than that.. advice wise. :?

other thing is, my 2h murders batteries in winter.
by far the CAT has superior capacity, quality built, and proven pedigree, from a earthmoving company that throws their batteries in dozers, trucks, tractors, backhoes, bobcats, excavators, blah blah blah.

youve just read, others opinions on optima, i nearly bought one myself, but my reputable local battery bloke.... bockman batteries albury, REFUSES to sell them.
warranty issues, poor performance, these guys have a brilliant name in the albury area, and have been selling batteries for years..............they did sell them once upon a time, but too many problems, their reputation was being tarnished..

optima's are way overpriced for what they offer.
500 for a battery, you got to be kidding  , do you realy need to think that one through........................................

Can confirm 175-4390 (328.4x171.2x236mm) Maintenance Free 1000 CCA 180 RC, by the specs this one is ever so slightly better.

Also 115-2422 (same measurements except height is 240.3mm) Maintenance Free 1000CCA 170RC.

The price I have through CAT parts store- 175-4390 $212.14
- 115-2422(9X-3404) $204.37

Thanks for the info. There is a cat dealer in unnandera and I'm working in the are so I will have to stop past and have a chat about the model numbers you guys have said and see what they can do.

I'm thinking that for the warranty they offer they must have fairly high confidence in their product.

Horses for courses. The optima batteries handle vibrations better as they are a coil inside not vertical plates. i killed 2 regular batteries by having the plates inside break off.
my optimas lasted 5 years and i now have some marine batteries in mine as thats all i could get at a desperate time and they seem to be working well.

I must say I have owned a optima blue top in my lux for 6 years and still going strong, although the auxillery battery ($400 other marine battery) only lasted 3 years when it started not running at full capacity.

I have since bought some other brand off eBay that seem ok.
3.0L turbo diesel, 4" lift, bud's front housing, track assasin cv's, air lokker front + Rear, beadlock'd 37 stickies, high steer, 15.5" travel ranchos, high pinion diff and coils on the rear

I also have 3 optima blue tops in my comp truck. 6 years old I think, it doesn't get used every day so a little different to some. They are mounted in the cab so I cannot use a traditional lead acid as it has to be sealed. Absolutely awesome batteries mostly as they charge so much quicker than anything else. I would never buy any other brand for what I use them for. $ 500.......are you kidding???? I can get them for around $300 so to me best value for money available. This includes a 3 year FULL replacement warrantee which in my view is just as good as a 2+2 cause anything over 3 years for any battery that gets smashed like mine do is a bonus..........IMHO

Bit the bullet and bought the cat 175 battery yesterday. Tried to install it last night but with the normal battery style lugs on top it doesn't quite fit under the bonnet little bit of lugging and a 10mm nylock and should be good.

Turns the motor over extremely easily now. Just hope it stands up to it for a few years now. Could beat it on price for any other decent battery with high cca.
