Barina G13A in a Sierra?

Post by fancourt »

I've been following this forum for a while and have done a search, but have some slightly different questions relating to this topic. I'd really appreciate some advice from you guys.

I have an 86 Drover with a smoky G13A in it. It still has 155/165/165/155psi of compression (after ~225k's) and so it seems the oil rings are shot (and the valve stem seals I think).

It's a stock setup with bigger wheels and that's all I really need. I'm also on an extremely tight budget (ie as little as possible).

I just scored a friend's old 85 Barina very cheaply with 194k's on the clock, but she had it for 12 years and was very anal about maintaining it, so it's immaculate. It's got 190psi on ALL cylinders and no oil leaks I can see.

Here's the question: In this barina the distributer is in the right spot for the sierra, but I believe the camshaft is different in the Barinas. What sort of difference will this make to 4WDing and road going ability (less low end torque perhaps - wild guess?)?

Second question: Can I expect another 60,000+kms out of a 19year old engine with 194,000km if it has 190psi of compression now? Will messing with the camshaft be likely to upset an engine this old? I will push it a bit 4WDing, but I'm not planning to rev the guts out of it on a regular basis. I do tow small trailers (less than 450kgs).

The other option is to sell the Barina and buy a younger 2nd hand engine. I don't want to have to touch the engine again once I've dropped it in, so the lack of history with 2nd hand engines concerns me a little. I'm after the cheapest, most reliable option.

Sorry for the long post, but that should be all the details.

Cheers,
Rob.

I'm pretty sure Chistover has a G13A out of a barina in his sierra... no doubt he will be able to post up some whiz bang info for you.

I put a G13B from a barina/swift into my sierra. It was a $850 import with a good warrantee.
the problem with the distributor is that it sticks straight out, and may interfere with the firewall.
if so, the cam needs changing, to the sierra one, to be able to drive the 90* sierra dizzy.
the sump, oil pick up and dipstick from the sierra needs fitting also (sump to diff clearance main reason)
mine was a one litre, so other alterations were needed, but yours is 1300 already, so not much else needs doing.
my opionion is, an import or 2nd hand engine is probably better than a rebuild (reco donks dont use suzuki original parts, which I think are good)

Why don't you see if a wrecker will do a deal on the Barina for an engine, maybe even a 1.6? Alljap at Virginia have the engines and can fit too
