tyre clearence - hilux

Post by buggy man »

Hey guys I just wanted to ask some opinions on the Most efficient way to gain some more front tyre clearence . So far my diff is in the standard position, and I'm running the stock steering and some 33" tyres.
Now keep in mind I'm trying to set the car up to allow me to run larger play tyres.
So do I buy some two inch wheel spacers and make room that way? Or a hub widening kit?
Ruf? I have some rear leaves but my steering is stock so it won't really work. Or shoul I bite the bullet and go hi steer?
Relocation pads? Will I need some adjustable steering parts with this? They move tghe diff 25mm
Or just redrill the spring pads?
Thanks guys just after the EFFICIENT way, not the best cost wise, not the most expensive but the one that I will notice the difference and I will get some results from :) thanks again.

High steer and either re drill spring perch for an extra 35mm clearance basically enough for 35s or go dropped hanger banana shackles and RUF as well to push the front diff further forward again

Can you manage without tge droped hanger? Are their other ways around it?
And what's the best price anyone has seen for highsteer? I'm thinking about the $800 mark, but they are cheeper in America but I assume shipping would be a killer?

Mate the diff will have to go forward to fit 35s. Fark that shitty hilux steering off and go high steer. Can source high steer arms from the states for like $200 landed, the you can use your current tie rod, and need to fab up a draglink. Not too hard, might be like $50 to get a piece of rod machined at a shop for you.. You will need a New steering box too.. From a later model hilux.

The dropped hanger really is only to fix the caster error that the longer shackles put on the diff, also when you put rears in the front it changes the caster a bit. I am doing it using stock spring hanger, and will fix caster with either wedges or a knuckle cut and turn depends how bad it is.

Also take into accont your front driveshaft, he will be about 50mm too short.

My opinion if you want 35's is definitely throw some rear springs up front. Mucking around with the J-arm steering while moving the diff forward is just a waste of time and money.

ig you got the money just put a kit from LOCKTUP4x4 full bolt in bud and with a little bit of HAMMER clearance i fit 35s with no body lift. on 16x10" rims with the widetracked front

I have a high steer kit (was from locktup) I have 4" lift kit and no dropped front hanger and it is a really tight fit with the steering arms.
Basically a dropped front hanger can be put on to correct castor but it is really needed to clear steering arms properly.

I only have 10" travel shocks on front and on full droop it touches springs lightly.

If you wanted 12-14" travel shocks you would definately need dropped hanger.

Don't go wheel spacers if you drive on road they are known to come loose and brake studs, go ifs hub widening kit locktup or bigger offset rims.

You can easily clear 35's with moving diff forward 35mm and just flattening inner guard a bit with a hammer.

J arms normally break after a while on 35's and on down travel (if you have 10" + travel shocks) normally j arm hits shock and puts a dent in casing..
That's why you go high steer/crossover

okay so stock tie rod is fine?
make up a new draglink, and buy some high steer arms.
i have a late model steering box handy,
so i theory i could have hi steer for say $400
i have some rear springs, and some 10" shocks.
so really i just need the dropped hanger, and some extended shackles.
Thanks again for the help.

Not sure if you can use stock tie rods with highsteer arms as the tie rod ends are 80 series cruiser ones.
You normally buy it as a kit with steering arm and drag link.

Make sure it's a ifs steering box pre 2004 and you'll be fine, you will need to buy/make ifs box fish plates to weld to chassy too with the crush tubes or it'll try and tear off if just bolted.

To add to what you wrote you'll need extended brake lines and if you are going to use them rear springs up front (RUF) it's not extended shackles but bannana shackles you will need.

Thanks for the help guys, I will be buying a hi steer kit soon :) can't wait! But if I do th ruf will I still need to redrill the spring perches?
Also I'm running 12" wide tyres, do you think if I went to a narrower tyre it would work better? Or will rub much the same ? I'd love some 35's but my 33's are absolutely new haha

No with RUF you should have enough clearance.

Nah 12.5" wide Tyres are pretty common, if you get a larger offset rims or ifs widening kit.

I got my high steer from the states. The high steer was around 350$, shipping was around $150. At the same time I got shocks ($150 for the pair), extended brake lines ($70) and a few other goodies so shipping cost wasn't a killer.

You could easily run 12" travel shocks in the front but on the standard shock mount (chassy side) you would be limited on up travel. If you put on extended shock hoops you would easily run 12-14" travel shocks.

If you are buying from states buy the whole lot as you will save a lot of money even with paying high postage.

If you we're to buy a large offset rim like -44 you shouldn't need ifs hubs or wheel spacers.

Bringing back up an old thread, is there any year or model on the ifs steering box that is better or worse. I got all my stuff delivered and need to find a steering box now at the wreckers. Also what sort of $$$ has everyone payed for the steering box

No it does not matter I'm pretty sure as I got a ifs box off a 1993 Toyota 4 runner originally for my highsteer but when I did my engine conversion from 1993 lux to 2004 lux I used the 2004 ifs box and it bolted up all the same.
I think (as a guess) you should use a ifs box pre 2004 as I think the current shape lux has a different box.

But get a later on as possible as its newer.

Normally $150 is the going rate..

Have a look around but if you can't find one cheaper I have one here you can have for $150.. But you should be able to get them for $100-150 over $200 is a rip off and so is the wreckers.
