Looking at getting a cheap fourby again after a bit of an hiatus from the scene. (Coming from Sprung over MQ Patrol and GQ with 38 boggers)
To be used for camping/4wding on weekends that can be bashed about and easily worked on.
A TJ Wrangler has taken to my eye due to:
Massive amount of aftermarket gear (Suspension, Turbo kits for the 4.0l)
Take the soft top off when wheeling + up the beach.
My ideal setup will be to run:
33" or 35" tyres
Auto locker in front and rear (Or perhaps a set of Jackie Chan air lockers?)
Winch on the front in some sort of bar.
Few quick questions:
Is the front diff going to deal with life with the above setup?
Is the STD wheelbase stable on steeper harder tracks or would it be highly benificial to get a long arm kit such as below or not worth the extra cost and stay with a short arm setup?

I also read somewhere that four link rear was a great mod?

In short, for a while, maybe. Then no. It aint up to it, esp if you drive with your right foot.
33's, maybe.
Skinny weak axles and uni's are the biggest issue.
There are plenty of modded jeeps around, like all things you are always better off financially to buy someone else's hard work (and money) for cheap rather than build it yourself. If you look around and are prepared to wait, you may find one comes up with aftermarket diffs etc already fitted.
That said, there is a limitless amount of aftermarket gear available for TJ's- perhaps THE most modified 4wd in thw world. Want a bolt in Currie or Dynatrac or Terraflex D44 or D60? Jump online and order away.
Turbo or supercharger etc I wouldnt bother with. The 4.0 is torquey enough as stock- extractors, TB etc will give nearly as good a result for a lot less cost and hassle.
The wheelbase is perhaps an issue on steep climbs, but given a lightly modded TJ comes in at under 1800kgs the weight, or lack of, compared to a Cruiser or Pootrol is a big advantage.
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.
